An agricultural scientist with a passion for research and development, Dr. Virmani has been contributing to the field of Crop Science since he began his career as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at The International Rice Research Institute in Manila, Philippines in 1970 soon after obtaining his Ph.D. degree from the Punjab Agricultural University, in Ludhiana, India in 1969. From 1973-79, Dr. Virmani worked for The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria, as Rice Breeder, posted in a national rice improvement program of Liberia, West Africa. Currently, he is working as a freelance consultant in International Agriculture, from Plano, Texas, USA.
Dr. Virmani is recognized for the tremendous work he has done in Hybrid Rice Research and Development worldwide. Noteworthy roles held by Dr. Virmani include: Principal Scientist (2004-05), Senior Scientist (1980-2004), in the Division of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, where he led the Hybrid Rice Research and Development Program for the tropical rice growing countries. He was also Deputy Head of the Division of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology at IRRI from 1990-2003. He has consulted for the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, Italy and Asia Pacific Seed Association in Bangkok, Thailand. He has also provided consultancy to national hybrid rice research and development programs of several public, private and NGO institutions in India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, Egypt, Myanmar, China, South Korea, North Korea, Japan, Columbia and Brazil.
For the impact of his work in crop science, Dr. Virmani was the recipient of several awards including the Padma Shri Award from the President of India in 2008, Pravasi Bhartiya Samman (Non Resident Indian Honor) Award from the President of India (2005), Koshihikari International Rice Prize from Japan (2005) and Monsanto Crop Science Distinguished Career Award from the Crop Science Society of America (2005), Plaque of Gratitude from the Department of Agriculture, Republic of the Philippines for developing hybrid rice technology and the associated human resources in the Philippines (2005), Agriculture and Rural Development Medal for the advancement of hybrid rice technology by the Ministry of Agriculture of Vietnam (2002). He also received the Gold Medal from the Asia Pacific Seed Association for developing and promoting hybrid rice technology in Asia (2000). Dr. Virmani was elected Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America in 2002, Fellow of the Third World Network of Scientific Societies in 2000, Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy in 1999 and Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, India in 1995. Dr. Virmani was a member of the editorial board for the International Journal of Plant Breeding (EUPHYTICA) from 1993-2003. He was selected for honorable inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Asia, Who's Who in the South and South West, and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Virmani earned a Ph.D degree in Plant Breeding from Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, India in 1969, a Master of Science in Agricultural Botany from Vikram University in Ujjain, India in 1963 and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the same university in 1961. Dr. Virmani intends to continue making contributions to the field of agricultural research and development as a globally recognized consultant to public, private and NGO-based institutions. He is also a member of the Rotary Club in Frisco, Texas, USA where he helps in its international services.
