Committed to academics, Ms. Anderson has more than three decades of experience as an elementary school teacher and special education teacher. She began her career upon receiving a Bachelor of Science from Texas Woman's University in 1979. From there, Ms. Anderson enjoyed a variety of roles as a teacher of self-contained special education from 1979 to 1980 at Ashford Elementary School after graduation and later rejoining Ashford Elementary School in 1981 as a special education resource/consulting teacher. While working for the Houston Independent School District, she completed a Master of Education in educational psychology and special education through the University of Houston in 1989. For more than two decades Ms. Anderson has taught in the preschool program for children with disabilities at Ashford Elementary School.
Additionally, Ms. Anderson maintains involvement with a wide variety of organizations, including the Divine Dynasphere Christian Center for Youth, Inc., Liberty Baptist Church General Mission, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is also affiliated with the Houston Teachers Association, Texas State Teachers Association, National Education Association, and Texas Retired Teachers Association.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Anderson has received numerous local and regional awards in recognition of her commitment to education. As early as 1985, she was named an Outstanding Young Educator and later Teacher of the Year in 1987 by Ashford Elementary School. Ms. Anderson was named an Ashford Exceptional Education Teacher of the Year, as well as a West District Runner-Up, in 1994. Most recently, she received the 1st Rev. George H. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Youth Award in 2008. Ms. Anderson has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. In addition, she was selected for inclusion in the 7th edition of Who's Who in American Education and the 15th, 16th, and 25th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
