BLOOMFIELD, MI, January 30, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- George Herbert Meyer has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Meyer retired in 2016 after 60 years of actively practicing law in Michigan to devote his efforts to writing, particularly on traditional American Folk Art.
He earned a BA from the University of Michigan in 1949, a J.D. from Harvard University in 1952, a certificate in English literature from Oxford University, England, in 1955, and a LLM in taxation and Labor Law from Wayne University in 1982.
He served as a first lieutenant in JAG in the USAF from 1952 to 1955, retiring from the USAF Reserves as a major.
Mr. Meyer started his private law practice with Fischer, Franklin & Ford in Detroit in 1956. He was a member of the firm from 1968 to 1974, when he resigned to establish his own firm. In 1978 John Kirk joined him and the firm became Meyer & Kirk, PLLC. Over the years, the names of additional partners were added to the Firm name.
Mr. Meyer has written many creative works throughout his career, including Equalization in Michigan and Its Effect on Local Assessment, published in1963, Folk Artists Biographical Index, published in 1986, and American Folk Art Canes - Personal Sculpture, published in 1992. Presently he is writing a book on early American face Jugs.
Mr. Meyer was Chairman of the Birmingham, MI, Board of Housing Appeals (1964-68), Vice-Chairman of the Birmingham Board of Zoning Appeals (1968-1970), a member of the Birmingham Planning Board, (1968-1970), and President of Bloomfield Village (1976-1980).
He has served as President of various not for profit organizations including, The American Folk Art Society (2000-2004), The Cranbrook Writer's Guild (2002-2004), the Harvard Law School Association of Michigan (1970-1978), and the Associates of the American Wing, Detroit Institute of Arts (2009-2012). Mr. Meyer also served as a trustee of The Detroit Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America (1986-1995), the Museum of American Folk Art, NYC (1987-2004) where he is a trustee emeritus, The Detroit Science Museum Society (1961-1974), The Detroit Science Center (1985-1999), and the Michigan Historical Foundation (2007-2011).
