A publishing executive with more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Tata began a scientific career upon graduating from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in 1977. He went on to receive a Master of Arts from Brigham Young University in 1980 before completing postgraduate coursework at the University of Turin in Italy. During this time, he worked as a research fellow for an organization located in Rome. Early in his career, Dr. Tata served as an instructor of department languages with the University of Utah while pursuing a Ph.D., which he received in 1986. From 1978 to 1991, he was recognized as a Mediterranean specialist with the Society of Early Historic Archaeology.
Dr. Tata has served in a variety of positions throughout the course of his career, including as a museum curator with the Pioneer Trail State Park, instructor of the department of art with Brigham Young University and research curator of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. From 1987 to 1993, he lent his talents as the president of the Museum of Information Systems. Since 1996, Dr. Tata has assisted Brigham Young University as the director of creative works. In this position he is responsible for the commercialization of all intellectual property related to content and copyright developed by the university faculty. From 2006-2013 he was adjunct professor of Business Italian at the Marriot School of Management. He has been the president and then chairman of Transoft International, Inc. for nearly 30 years.
He is also a documentary film producer. In 2004 he was the executive producer of "Out of the Ashes, Recovering the Lost Library of Herculaneum." A KBYU documentary production, Out of the Ashes traces the history of the Herculaneum papyri from the time of the eruption, to their discovery in 1752, to modern developments that impact their study. The documentary was broadcast on more than 170 public television stations in the U.S. and, through distributor American Public Television Worldwide, it has aired on networks around the world including Al Jazeera and ARTE (France). Out of the Ashes was screened at venues in Italy and at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The documentary received the 2004 Telly Award for best documentary. It also received other awards including a Grand Gold Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and an Outreach Award from the American Philological Association. In 2006 he was executive co-producer of Italians in Utah, From the First Immigrants until Today.
Recognized as a Brigham Young Scholar, Dr. Tata is a patentee in the method and system for computerized learning, response and evaluation. He is the co-author of "L'italiano per gli affari, Corso introduttivo al mondo aziendale italiano," Polistampa, Florence, 2011. He has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World. In addition, Dr. Tata has been selected for inclusion in the 3rd edition of Who's Who in Entertainment and the 1st edition of Who's Who in the Media and Communication, which were both published in 1997.
