Mr. Watkins is a seasoned transportation engineer with a long career as a railroad executive. He began his education in 1947 at Western Kentucky University where he received a Bachelor of Science. One year later, he graduated from Northwestern University with a Master of Business Administration. In 1949, he joined Chesapeake and Ohio Railway as a staff analyst, and by 1961 had become their treasurer. In 1964, following the affiliation of Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and Baltimore and Ohio Railroad with Chessie System Inc., Mr. Watkins was elected vice president of finance for both companies. He served the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway for 31 years and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for 16 years. It was not long before he progressed even further to become president and CEO of both railroads at age 45. Mr. Watkins' rise continued in 1975 when he became chairman, president, and CEO of Chessie System Inc.
Mr. Watkins views his greatest accomplishment as his merger of the Chessie System Inc. with the Seaboard Coast Line Industries to form CSX Corporation in 1980. CSX Corporation is now one of the nation's leading transportation services, and includes traditional rail service and the transport of intermodal containers and trailers. The network currently encompasses 21,000 route miles of track in 23 states, the District of Columbia and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Mr. Watkins served as chairman and CEO of the corporation. He held his position of chairman of the board of directors until his retirement in 1991. He is now chairman emeritus of CSX.
In light of his achievements, Mr. Watkins was named Man of the Year by Modern RR Magazine in 1984. He was also a recipient of the Excellence in Management Award by Industry Week Magazine in 1982. His contributions have warranted him an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Baldwin Wallace College, Alderson Broaddus College, College of William and Mary, and the Virginia Union University. Mr. Watkins is also a member of the National Association Accountants and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants. His contributions have been honored with a feature in Who's Who In Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in America: Student Version, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
