For more than four decades, Ms Flahavin has served as a painter, sculptor, teacher and speaker in the field of art. Living in the Spokane region, she demonstrates specialized techniques and principal work in pastel, oil, portraiture and bronze sculpture, which have all been represented in shows and galleries nationwide. In her career she has received critical success for her work, having been named a Maxima Cum Laude Fellow of the American Artists Professional League, a full member of the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club and signature member of the Pastel Society of America, all national organizations located in New York City, and a signature member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast and the Northwest Pastel Society. She is also an Emeritus member of Women Artists of the West.
She has had work accepted in or awarded in numerous national shows including those above as well as the Salmagundi Annual (NYC), the Portrait Society of America (FL), the Pastel Society of America, (NYC), the International Association of Pastel's annual exhibit, the Bennington Fine Arts annual show and the Pastel Society of America's juried show at the Butler Institute in Ohio.
Awards include the Art Spirit award (Best of Pastel) from the American Artists Professional League National Juried Show, Best of Shows and various awards in other juried national shows as well as two awards for bronze and porcelain sculptures in the Portrait Society of American Membership juried show.
Because of her work and dedication to her field she was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in American Art for 25 years, as well as by Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women.
Before establishing herself as a professional at 40, specializing in portraiture, she had earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Holy Names College and done considerable self-study that expanded her breadth of knowledge and experience. Additionally she was commissioned by Goebel to do a plate and figurine series, and then she did a series of garden and fountain sculptures of children marketed throughout the United States. Several institutions have her work, mostly of children; Ronald McDonald House, St. Anne's Children's Home, Morning Star Boys Ranch, Gonzaga Prep and the new St. John the Baptist Church in Salt Lake City.
She also took on various leadership roles in art organizations and had contributed numerous articles to Southwest Art and Art of the West magazines, Art Talk and Midwest Art for WAOW. As she looks to the future, Ms Flahavin intends to continue creating beautiful works of art when she takes on new projects and opportunities as they arise.
