In a career that began in 1962 as a philosophy teaching assistant at UCLA, Dr. Levy has met with success over the last five decades by employing innovative techniques to crash through stone walls in business research. Starting in 1988, she became the first researcher to gain access to the boardrooms of major corporations, with that accessibility subsequently extended to allow unsupervised interactions with anyone from the boardroom to the loading dock. Based on this research, Dr. Levy published three books and numerous articles, becoming a major player in virtually all sectors of corporate governance. Since the early 1980s, she has been owner and president of Life Choices and Death Wishes.
Dr. Levy is president, CEO, director and secretary of Directors Data, Inc., a for-profit corporation whose research-based product has the ability to organize all of the world's information on boards of directors and governance in a way that enables better understanding and use of that information. While on the faculty of the Fordham Graduate School of Business Administration and CEO of the Academy for Corporate Governance at Fordham University's Graduate School of Business, Dr. Levy and a colleague created and directed real-time unscripted, unrehearsed enactment of an attempted takeover of a major corporation, a "civilian war game" that had never been tried before. In the 1980s, an era characterized by extensive hostile takeover activity, participants in the "game" included many of the principal participants in real-world takeovers. The "game" became a major event in a meeting of the World Management Council, receiving press coverage all over the world. It was subsequently used in law and management classrooms to teach about takeovers. Inside the classroom, Dr. Levy has been an assistant professor of management policy, industry analysis, and boards of directors in the MBA and Executive MBA courses for Case Western Reserve University and Fordham University's Graduate School of Business Administration. She was also a senior research associate for the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Dr. Levy's other work included serving as president and a director of the Institute for Research on Boards of Directors and as a programmer, project manager, and consultant for Honeywell Information Systems. She also served on the Massachusetts Governor's Task Force on Management, with responsibility for all computers in the state.
Before establishing her career in 1962, Dr. Levy earned from Smith College, a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in philosophy with an unofficial minor in history. Later, she attended Harvard University, where she earned an MBA in 1976 and a Doctor of Business Administration in 1980. Today, she remains at the head of her field through affiliations with the American Bar Association, the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Association of Corporate Directors, the National Investor Relations Institute, and the Conference Board. Her current interests focus on examples from the humanities, especially politics, history, and literature, that improve understanding of governance and on the intersection of politics and other forms of governance.
