About Sally Love Saunders
Ms. Saunders is currently running poetry festivals at The Cultural Integration Fellowship in San Francisco. She has two scheduled for 2017.
SAlly describes herself as a Johnny Appleseed poet. She has traveled all over the country planting "seeds" and helping people of all ages get in touch with their own unique creativity. In the workshops she leads, which are entitled Healing Power of Poetry, she shares Poetry Therapy writing techniques to use with patients or for their own personal enrichment for stress reduction and for strong healing. "With this discovery, one realizes their own inner strengths; a springboard to self esteem," said Sally.
Sally is a widely published poet, lecturer, workshop leader and author of six poetry books. Sally's poetry and articles have appeared in over 300 recognized publications, both literary and scholarly journals as well as periodicals such as The New York Times and the Christian Science Monitor. Poems she penned about going through breast cancer appeared in Coping Magazine and were read at an American Cancer Society function. The book of poems about that journey is entitled "The Gown Opens In The Front," which she would love to have published.
As one of the 'founding fathers' of The National Association for Poetry Therapy, Sally has spoken at many conferences familiarizing health care professionals with her unique approach to teaching poetry writing. In the course of her career, she has received numerous city, state and private grants for Poetry Therapy in libraries, schools and state institutions. For example, she received grants from The U.S. Department of State to teach teachers in the Appalachia region of Pennsylvania how to teach poetry writing. The Recreation Department of the City of Philadelphia gave her a grant to combine poetry writing and game playing in three libraries in the city. And, with migrant laborers in King Ferry, NY, she first taught laubach literacy and then taught some senior migrants how to write poetry.
Sally taught poetry writing at Phelps School in Malvern, PA and Chautagua Institution in NY. She also did poetry therapy with adolescents and seniors at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, and received several anonymous grants to expand her work in the hospital. She also did poetry therapy at Haverford Hospital, Rolling Hill Hospital, and Highland Hospital in Oakland for resident medical students for stress reduction. At Mt. Zion Hospital, she did poetry writing workshops for breast cancer patients.
Sally was Poet in Residence at the Rice House at Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC, and she hosted multiple writing workshops, poetry readings and writing workshops at various branches of the San Francisco Public Library. At the Margret Fuller Settlement House in Cambridge, MA, Sally did poetry with children, performed their poetry, and put out magazines of their published poetry. She had an autograph party at John Wanamaker's Store (now Macy's) in Philadelphia and a book signing at Quissett Book Store in Haverford, PA.
Sally has found great comfort and strength in writing and reading poetry. With her poetry, she helps others to get in touch with their own powers. Like a deep sea diver unearthing buried treasure, Sally has had the joy of opening treasure chests filled with jewels. Poetry, to her, is a rare and beautiful freedom and this is what she wants to share with others.
