Dr. Scherer recently received the Faculty and Resident Recognition for Outstanding Service in Research, Teaching and Mentoring from the University of Rochester Medical Center's Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Currently serving as a professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Rochester Medical Center, she has performed her role exceptionally well. She is also the president and director of The Institute for Matching Person & Technology, Inc. Recently, she was appointed to the international 6-member Organizing Committee of the World Health Organization's August 2017 "Global Research, Innovation, and Education in Assistive Technology (GREAT) Summit."
Previously, Dr. Scherer was the director of consumer evaluations and a senior research associate for the Center for Assistive Technology at the University at Buffalo, an associate professor at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, a psychotherapist at the Erie County Department of Mental Health, and an editor for the Mental Health Association of Erie County, Inc.
Before embarking on her career as a psychologist and educator, Dr. Scherer earned a Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University in 1970. This was soon followed by a Master of Science from the University at Buffalo, as well as a Master of Public Health and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Rochester. Dr. Scherer is also a certified rehabilitation counselor.
Dr. Scherer has been recognized for her work through inclusion in Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. She was also a grantee on behalf of the National Institutes of Health as well as the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research. Other commendations she's received include an award for outstanding achievement for her work on the Assistive Technology Assessment Handbook, a Distinguished Member Award from the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM), the Rho Chi Sigma Literary Award, the Sam McFarland Memorial Mentor Award and the Roger G. Barker Distinguished Research Contribution Award.
Driven to contribute to her field, Dr. Scherer has also authored many works. These include her trilogy on matching people with disabilities with the most appropriate supports for their use: Living in the State of Stuck: How Assistive Technology Impacts the Lives of People with Disabilities, Assistive Technologies and Other Supports for People with Brain Impairment, and "Connecting to Learn: Educational and Assistive Technology for People with Disabilities," among many others. She was also a co-author for "Assistive Technology in the Workplace," Editor-in-Chief of "Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology," and a member of several editorial boards for scientific journals.
Dr. Scherer continues to be active in her field as a member of AAUW, The New York Academy of Sciences, ARATA, and the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists and Psychodiagnosticians. She was additionally named a fellow of the American Psychological Association, RESNA, and American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM).
