With nearly six decades in medicine to his name, Dr. George Hill celebrates his status as a professor emeritus at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. As is the case with many successful professionals, Dr. Hill's story begins with a strong educational foundation. He graduated from the prestigious Yale University in 1953, and he earned his MD from Harvard University in 1957. From there, he became an intern at New York Hospital, and his career was on the rise. From New York Hospital, he transferred to Peter Bent Brigham Hospital as a fellow and resident in surgery from 1958 until 1966, taking a two-year hiatus in 1961 to serve as a clinical associate of the National Institutes of Health.
In 1966, Dr. Hill joined the University of Colorado as an instructor of surgery, advancing to the role of associate professor by 1973. He earned a full professorship that same year through Washington University, where he remained until 1976. Dr. Hill joined Marshall University as a professor for five years before migrating to New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
He would remain here for the rest of his career, and he currently serves as professor emeritus.
In recognition of his dedication and service to his community, Dr. Hill was named Jerseyan of the Week by the Newark-Star Ledger in 1987, and later again in 1993. He is active in scouting and has earned a number of awards from Boy Scouts of America, including a Good Scout Award, a Vigil honor in 2005, and the Silver Beaver Award. His other professional accolades include a Lederle Medical Faculty Award in 1970 and a Civil Actions Medal for his military service in the Republic of South Vietnam.
