She is now a Council Member of the Legislative Council for the Ministry of Justice and a Council Chairman of the Road Tax Rating Council of the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau. Looking back on her more than 45-year career, at first she worked for Japan Air Lines as a cabin attendant. From there, she established her own company, Pastel Co. After closing Pastel Co., she worked as an advisor to the President of Spalding Japan, and as an advisor to the Vice-President of Teikoku Data Bank, which is the largest corporate credit information company in Japan. Then, she worked as a Managing Associate of Coopers and Lybrand Japan Co., Ltd. Dr. Shirata started to teach at the University after working for these companies. Dr. Shirata had taught as a professor of accounting at Nihon University, the Shibaura Institute of Technology, and the University of Tsukuba.
An alumna of the University of Tsukuba, Dr. Shirata holds an MBA, as well as a Doctor of Business Administration. Dr. Shirata was nominated as a council member of the Science Council of Japan by the Prime Minister of Japan; only three people were selected from all accounting and business administration area researchers in Japan. She also had been serving as the Secretary General of the Science Council of Asia, of which 19 Asian countries are members.
