A former professor at the higher education level, Dr. Forney displayed an expertise and passion for chemical engineering for more than four decades. Now retired, he concluded his career as an associate professor of chemical engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, where he first began his tenure with the college in 1979. Previously, he came to prominence as an assistant professor for the department of civil engineering at the University of Illinois in Urbana. Other noteworthy roles held in Dr. Forney's career include research engineer for the Walden Research division of Abcor, Inc., as well as research engineer for Norton Research Corporation in Cambridge, MA. In recognition of his professional excellence, Dr. Forney was the recipient of various fellowship awards from the National Institutes of Health and SCEEE. Additionally, he earned a Water Award from IChemE, a Food & Drink Processing award from IChemE, and multiple grants from the National Science Foundation, EPA, the US Department of Energy, the US Air Force and the Georgia FoodPAC. More recently, Dr. Forney was selected for inclusion into Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
Before establishing himself professionally, Dr. Forney prepared for his career by investing in his education. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Case Institute of Technology in 1966, a Master of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969, a Master of Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1974.
To stay at the top of his field, Dr. Forney is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, where he served in various roles over the years including coordinator of sessions and annual meeting coordinator. He also affiliates with the Harvard Society of Engineers and Scientists, the North American Mixing Forum, the Harvard Club and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Club. Dr. Forney has taken on career opportunities outside of his profession that have allowed him to demonstrate his leadership further and make contributions and impacts on his field. In addition to achieving patents for Taylor-Couette flow and UV disinfection of fluids, he has served as a consultant for Commercial Union Insurance Co., Dupont, Leeds & Northrup, Crystal Clean Technologies and the US Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory. As he looks to the future, Dr. Forney intends to enjoy retirement while taking on select consulting projects and opportunities as they arise.
