Dr. Park has been the director of Sea Green Industry Institute since 2010. In this role, he oversees major research efforts regarding future sustainable aquaculture in order to meet the protein demands of the increasing world population. This primarily involves the study of tidal flat oyster culture, sea cucumber, and scallop aquacultures. Over the course of his career, Dr. Park has published approximately 55 articles, 72 business reports and three books on the topic of fisheries science.
To prepare for this line of work, Dr. Park earned a Master of Science in earth science from Chosun University and a Ph.D. in fisheries biology from Jeju National University. In 2013, he furthered his education through graduate studies in advanced marine policy at Seoul National University. Dr. Park has utilized his academic foundation throughout his career, much of which was spent with the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS).
Dr. Park began working for NIFS in 1985 as a scientist and senior researcher, and thus spent the next eight years focused on the study of aquaculture, marine research and artificial fish effect research. From 1993 until 1999, he was the director of NIFS's Gangneung Fisheries Research Institute, overseeing research on artificial seedling for aquaculture. Dr. Park then spent six years with NIFS's West Sea Fisheries Institute in the fisheries aquaculture division. He has been retired from NIFS since 2010.
Aside from his work with NIFS, Dr. Park's past professional positions have acted as professional research personnel for the National Research Foundation of Korea, president of the 10th International Congress on Medical and Applied Malacology, director of the Tidal Flat Research Institute, and president of the Malacological Society of Korea. He has continued to serve as a consultant for the Malacological Society of Korea since 2012. Furthermore, Dr. Park has lectured on fisheries science at Kunsan National University, Kangnung University, and Inha University. He was an invited professor in Dongwoo University's Department of Fisheries Science from 1995 to 2000, and an invited professor in Chosun University's Department of Earth Science from 2004 to 2005.
Dr. Park remains current in his field through affiliations with the Korean Society of Oceanography, the Korea Society for Fisheries and Marine Sciences Education, and the Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Science. His professional efforts have been recognized with a number of formal honors, including a Presidential Citation in 2000, a Korean Government Medal in 2010, and an award from the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries in 2013.
Dr. Park was born on 9 February 1950 in Wando City, Republic of Korea. He is married to Kyung-Yeop Cho and they have two daughters.
