Born in Sterling, CO, in 1925, Mr. Summers is a mechanical engineer who has perfected his craft after spending an astonishing 70 years in the industry. Beginning his career in 1945, Mr. Summers first worked for Interstate Engineering in El Segundo, CA, where he learned how to design hydraulic and pneumatic valves for aircraft. Nearly 13 years later, he accepted a similar position with Calmec, which became Ametek Calmec. In 1990 he left the company to join Senior Aerospace Ketema, in El Cajon, CA, where he remained until 2015.
Founded in 1953, Senior Aerospace Ketema is a leading provider of components for aircraft and turbine engine builders and precision integrated manufacturing for space, marine, and ground-based applications. Specializing in producing a number of complex fabrications and machined components from titanium and nickel alloys, they are located on a 27-acre site in San Diego County and boast several buildings with more than 378,000 square feet of manufacturing space.
During the final 57 years of his career, Mr. Summers designed cryogenic valves for virtually all liquid-fueled rockets for the United States space industry. His valves are currently in use in the SpaceX rockets, the current Atlas V and Delta IV rockets, and he follows the adventures of Cassini which has one of his valves, exploring the rings of Saturn. While Mr. Summers was working at Calmec, he received a visit from Wernher von Braun, the "father of modern rocketry" who wanted to meet "the genius who designed that valve!"
Mr. Summers gained his engineering credentials through night school classes in Los Angeles colleges, including USC and UCLA. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World, he is the recipient of a 1968 Douglas Aircraft VIP Award, a 1971 NASA Achievement Award, a 1991 MacDonnell Douglas President's Award, a 1992 Spirit of Excellence Award, and a 2004 NASA Snoopy Award. A registered Republican and practicing Baptist, two of Mr. Summers' favorite pastimes include woodworking and R.C. models.
