For the past half a century, Barbara Walley Schaff has drawn her inspiration from the natural world and later, Asian calligraphy, distilling it in her statement: "All truth resides in the spontaneity of nature." A self-taught artist in clay, Barbara earned a BA from Syracuse University, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1994, traveled to Hangzhou, China, to learn about traditional calligraphy and ink painting at the China National Academy of Fine Art. She enjoyed a fruitful 20-year career as a ceramicist before evolving from painting with glaze on porcelain tile to painting on canvas.

In addition to creating one-of-a-kind works, Ms. Schaff served as an advisory board member for the Coalition Ingenue from 2006 to 2011. The nonprofit organization promotes artwork by self-taught individuals and supports artists who have dealt with difficult situations like homelessness or mental health problems. Ms. Schaff also served on the advisory board of the Louise Nevelson Foundation in Philadelphia, PA from 2007 to 2011. That same year in Mooretown, NJ, she was a juror for the Perkins Center for the Arts' Members and Faculty Show. From 2005 to 2008, she was a member of the Fellows Council of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, VA, from 1989 to 1993, she was a member of the Artist Advisory Council for the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ, and from 1988 to 1994, she served as an advisor to the faculty for the BFA in Studio program at Kean College, Union, NJ. Between 1996 and 2013, Barbara was honored as the resident artist for 11 out of 17 years at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and from 1984 to 1985 she was a fellow of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Ms. Schaff has received numerous noteworthy honors including the 2008 Jurors Award for "Works on Paper" from the Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown, NJ; the Newark Museum Purchase Award, her first Jurors Award for Works on Paper from the Perkins Center for the Arts, and Third Prize for "Prints and Drawing Exhibition" from the Philadelphia Sketch Club, all in 2005. In 2002 Barbara received the Gold Award for her exhibition catalog, "2002 U B the Judge" from the Appleton Paper Corp. In 1999 and 1998, she received a Blue Ribbon for Outstanding Achievement from the Long Beach Island Art Foundation. In 1994, she was honored with the Mabel Wilson Woodrow Memorial Award, Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts School; the ARCO Chemical Corporation Purchase Prize, the Philadelphia Artists Award, Special Notice, and The Charles Toppan Prize. In 1993, she received the ARCO Chemical Corporation Purchase Prize, Joanne Culver Prize, Special Notice, and Catherine Grant Memorial Prize. In 1986, Ms. Schaff received the Medal of Excellence for Promotion and Design at the Art Directors Club of New Jersey's 23rd Annual Awards ceremony. In 1985, she received a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship, and since 2004, she has been a fellow of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
Ms. Schaff was born to Miron M. and Silvia S. Walley in Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1941.
