Dr. Lai has been in full-time private practice as a consultant in chemical pathology and metabolic medicine at Gleneagles Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia since March 2004. Specializing in the treatment of those suffering with diabetes and various types of thyroid disorders, Dr. Lai is dually trained in metabolic medicine (endocrinology and diabetes) and clinical biochemistry.
Leaving his country of Malaysia to study at The Leys School in Cambridge, a boarding school in the United Kingdom, Dr. Lai did tremendously well and was awarded the Josiah Stamp Prize for Science in 1978. He graduated with his MBBS from The United Medical Schools of Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospitals, University of London in 1983, later completing his Master of Science at Charing Cross and Westminster Hospital Medical School in 1987. Finally, in 1990, Dr. Lai earned his MD at the University of London. Receiving several awards during his years in medical school, he then relocated to Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom as a consultant and department head for clinical biochemistry at Freeman Hospital and as a senior lecturer in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine at University of Newcastle upon Tyne's Medical School.
Spending many more years in consulting, Dr. Lai worked at Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Prince Court Medical Center, and Sunway Medical Center, where he also served as the clinical director of pathology. In 2009, he went back to work at Gleneagles as their Director of Pathology, while still maintaining his private practice as a Consultant Endocrinologist. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Dr. Lai was a professor of clinical biochemistry and metabolic medicine and deputy dean of the medical department at University of Putra Malaysia before becoming dean of the postgraduate medical school at the International Medical University. For his academic contributions and achievements, Dr. Lai was named the Outstanding Young Malaysian for Academic Leadership and Accomplishment, 1999.
Dr. Lai is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Fellow of Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, UK, and Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Science, Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. He is affiliated with the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine Education and Management Division Executive Committee, where he has been a member since 2003, as Vice-Chairman from 2008 to 2013, and as Chairman since 2015. He was also Chair of the IFCC Visiting Lecturer Program from 2007 till 2013. Dr. Lai is also a member of the Endocrine Society, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American Association for Clinical Chemistry, Society for Endocrinology of the United Kingdom, Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine of the United Kingdom, Malaysian Association of Clinical Biochemists, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, Asia-Pacific Federation for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, where he served as a Travelling Lecturer from 2007 to 2008, as Chair of the Education Committee from 1998 till 2004, as Vice-President from 2004 to 2010, and as President from 2010 till 2016 and from 2017 is the Immediate Past President. As a member of College of Pathologists, he has been Chairman of the Laboratory Quality Assurance Scheme since 1998 and a Council Member from 2002 till 2008. Additionally, Dr. Lai participated as an Editor, Associate Editor, and Member of the Editorial Board for numerous professional journals, and has also contributed numerous scientific papers and reviews in peer-reviewed scientific journals, chapters to books, editorials, abstracts, and proceedings of conferences.
