Mr. Ewing is a notable voice in Colorado efforts to prevent suicide and treat mental illness, after nearly dying from Bipolar II disorder in 1984. He has offered his services as an accounting professional to mental health groups since then, and helped to establish suicide prevention resources in Colorado, often pro bono. Mr. Ewing was the owner of the private accounting firm Jack R. Ewing, CPA from 1993 to 2007, and was awarded the 2006 Everyday Heroes and Heroines Award by the Colorado Society of CPAs. He is now retired from accounting, and focuses on helping others with mental health disorders.
Born to Robert Maxwell and Blanche Julia Ewing in San Francisco, Mr. Ewing attended the University of Missouri to earn a BS in 1969. His academic excellence was recognized by membership in the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity, where he served as president his last year in college. Mr. Ewing went on to a staff accountant position with Fox & Company in St. Louis for one year. Mr. Ewing enlisted in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1974. From 1970 to 1972, he was assigned to the Communications Command as a radio operator providing emergency communications. He also connected military personnel serving in South Viet Nam to with their loved ones. From 1972 to 1974, he was assigned to U.S. Air Force Audit Agency. He received an Honorable Discharge attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He returned to Fox & Company for five years before becoming an audit manager with Erickson, Hunt & Spillman Professional Corporation in Fort Collins, Colorado. The firm was renamed to Hunt, Spillman & Ewing in 1982, and Mr. Ewing became stockholder and owner until 1993, when he left to establish his private practice. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the Colorado Society of CPAs.
Mr. Ewing has been diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder. He has continued to build a successful life after his brush with death. Realizing others were going through the same condition, he joined the Suicide Resource Center of Larimer County in 1993 and served as president from 1998 to 2000. He has offered his time pro bono on mental health projects, including the state of Colorado Indicators and Outcomes Committee, the 1998 Governor's Suicide Prevention Citizens Advisory Panel, the State of Colorado Mental Health Planning Council, the Colorado Behavioral Healthcare Council, and the Larimer County Mental Health Advisory Board serving as president for three years.
Mr. Ewing was a cofounder of the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Partnership in Colorado, and joined the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado from 1999 to 2001. He was elected to Leadership Fort Collins in 1992. Additionally, he has been a director and treasurer with the Center for Diversity in the Work Place as well as the One West Contemporary Art Center. Mr. Ewing has volunteered his time to furthering future success in the Entrepreneur of the Year selection committee in Fort Collins, as well as the Beattie Elementary School as president of the parent advisory board.
Since 1986, Mr. Ewing has been giving lectures and writing on mental illness and suicide prevention, and has personally prevented many tragedies. He is acutely aware that Bipolar II disorder is considered to be the mental disorder most likely to result in suicide, and has felt the condition's "death knell" keenly, using it as an experience to teach resistance and tenacity to others. For his strength in overcoming mental disorder and helping others to follow in his footsteps, Mr. Ewing was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, and two volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business. He has gone on to fill his life with things he enjoys, such as writing, traveling, and hiking. Mr. Ewing was married to Joan Marie Coughlin Ewing in 1967, and they had two children, Tracy Marie Benjamin and Christina Ann Barnes, who gave the couple three grandchildren, Lily Benjamin, Payton Benjamin, and Cadence Barnes.
