In 1959, Dr. Kikukawa was born in Osaka, Japan. He attended the School of Medicine at Yamaguchi University, earning a BA in medicine in 1984, and was certified medical license by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan. Dr. Kikukawa matriculated at Kyoto University to earn a BA in economics in 1990 and a BA in science in 1993. He also matriculated at the Graduate School of Medicine at Kyoto University to earn a PhD in1999. He majored in basic brain science research. He et al demonstrated for the first time that marked axonal regeneration occurs spontaneously in ascending pathways (the dorsal column projections) of the central nervous system using infant rats.
In 2000, Dr. Kikukawa went on to the Matsuyama Cardiovascular Medical Center, and began to serve as a staff psychiatrist for Nishi Ube Hospital. He became a staff psychiatrist for Ogori Makihara Hospital in 2005. While attending at Ogori Makihara Hospital, Dr. Kikukawa and his wife, Reiko Kikukawa, conducted a study on sodium valproate with seven patients in a convalescent rehabilitation ward. Using the Japan Stroke Scale- Emotional Disturbance Scale and the Barthel Index, they determined that sodium valproate yielded a marked improvement on the standards of a recovering patient's daily life. He was certified as a mental health psychiatrist by the Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare in Japan in 2008. He became a staff psychiatrist for Kyoto Min-iren Chuo Hospital in 2015. He engages in psychiatry generally (dementia and developmental psychiatry in particular). In addition to clinical psychiatry, Dr. Kikukawa also contributes to numerous professional articles and psychiatric organizations. He is a member of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology (certified specialist, certified instructor), the Japan Society of Dementia Research (certified specialist, certified instructor), the Japanese Society of Clinical Neuropsychopharmacology (certified specialist), the Japanese Association for Rehabilitation Medicine, the Japanese Society of Neurology, and the Japan Neuroscience Society.
