Since 2015, Dr. Ishikawa has served as chief professor of the department of legal medicine at the Medical School of Osaka City University. As a practitioner of legal medicine, also known as forensic medicine, he applies medical techniques to forensic endocrinology, forensic toxicology, and in particular clinical forensic pathology. Dr. Ishikawa is often a key point of determination in cases of natural death, assaults, sexual abuse, and more, spanning the breadth of criminality. His work includes the exhumation of remains and the medical examination of surreptitiously disposed bodies.
Dr. Ishikawa is an alumnus of the Kawasaki Medical School in Okayama, Japan. From 1999 to 2003, he studied with the department of legal medicine in the Graduate School of Medicine and Dentistry at nearby Okayama University, and went on to serve a clinical residency with the Kawasaki Medical School. In 2004, he joined Osaka City University as a research associate with the department of legal medicine, and in 2007, he accepted a role as assistant professor of the university. Dr. Ishikawa was invited as a guest researcher of the Institute of Legal Medicine at the University Hospital Freiburg in Germany, serving from 2009 to 2010. He returned to Osaka City University as an associate professor, and joined Tottori University as chief professor in 2013. Two years later, Dr. Ishikawa returned to head the department of legal medicine at Osaka City University.
At the intersection between medicine and the law, Dr. Ishikawa has performed a number of services that have gained not only national but international recognition. He won first prize for the pathology and DNA divisions at the 2003 Fifth International Symposium on Advances in Legal Medicine, as well as a 2007 Excellent Article prize from Legal Medicine, a 2009 Investigator Award from the Japanese Association of Criminology, a 2004 Teacher of the Year award from Osaka City University Medical School, a 2010 Investigator Award from the Japanese Society of Legal Medicine, and a third prize poster presentation at the 2007 Ninth Indo-Pacific Congress on Legal Medicine and Forensic Science presented by the Indo-Pacific Association of Law, Medicine and Science. Dr. Ishikawa is also a member of the management committee of the Japanese Association of Forensic Pathology, the scientific committee of the International Academy of Legal Medicine, the German Society of Legal Medicine, the College of American Pathologists as an international fellow, and the advisory board of the International Journal of Legal Medicine.
He devotes much of his time to producing numerous forensic and legal medicine materials for clinical journals. In his spare moments, Dr. Ishikawa enjoys fishing, as well as spending time with his wife and two daughters.
