Mr. Teets is an accomplished mechanical engineer and the co-founder of TMA Power, L.L.C., where he serves as president and chief designer. He started the company with his brother to realize a dream begun as a student, to own his own company and design his own gas turbine engines. Mr. Teets holds patents for a radially staged RQL low emissions combustor, 23 other patents and has over 47 years of experience in the field of engineering.
B.S. Engineer graduate of Saint Louis University, Mr. Teets studied aeronautical engineering, before performing coursework in mechanical engineering with the University of Connecticut. Before entering Saint Louis University, he studied at a junior college called the Academy of Aeronautics, where he first touched a gas turbine engine. In that moment, Mr. Teets was inspired to go towards his profession, and set to work realizing his dream of owning his own gas turbine engine company. During his college years, 1967 to 1972, thru independent studies and in his spare time he designed, manufactured, built and tested his first gas turbine engine model J5-1 and was instrumental in attaining his first job in engineering at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. He attributes his success to entering the workforce early. Mr. Teets credits his parents for the achievement; they taught him the importance of applying himself to his work and also his wife Jill who unswervingly supported his endeavors.
Over the course of his career of challenging opportunities, Mr. Teets has worked for such luminary firms as Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and Chromalloy, along with aerospace component manufacturing firms. From 1985 to 1993, he co-invented, designed, manufactured and successfully tested the first 35kW gas turbine powered AC generator. From 1993 to 1995, he co-founded Universal Turbine Energy Systems (UTES) as vice president of manufacturing, co-inventing the first microturbine and it was in 1995, as a part owner of a JV with Elliott Co. of Pennsylvania, Elliott Energy Systems, Inc. was formed to develop and put into production the world's first microturbine for the distributed energy markets and was awarded a patent. In 2002, Mr. Teets left to start TMA Power, LLC with his brother, co-inventing the world's first hybrid gas turbine engine, was awarded a patent and now has developed the first engine TMA70 (5th successful gas turbine engine since 1985) a low emission, high efficiency, simplistic, low cost electric power for vehicular electric, distributed energy and portable electric power markets.
Mr. Teets is known in engineering circles as an innovator of the hybrid gas turbine engine, the microturbine engine, and other technologies vital to such applications as hybrid electric vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, portable electric power and distributed energy. As one of these technologies is cleaner burning engines, which do not require exhaust gas treatments. Applying the hybrid gas turbine engine / technologies in a combined cycle system vehicular market a 50% improvement in miles per gallon is attained; in an electric power plant combined cycle and concentrated solar power $.04/kW-hr. to the customer are realized.
In addition to providing professional engineering services, Mr. Teets has been a longstanding member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers co-authoring two technical papers in the field of electrical power combined cycle engine and concentrated solar electric power applying developed hybrid gas turbine engine technologies. He is an accomplished artist in oil seascapes and graphic portraits. As a licensed pilot in single engine aircraft and a licensed A&P mechanic he enjoys airmanship in his Piper J3 Cub.
TMA Power, LLC is now marketing the hybrid gas turbine engine in the vehicular (air-land-sea), distributed energy, military, solar electric and portable electric power markets.
