Born in Paterson, NJ to Claude John & Esther Emery, Mrs. Cohen graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia earning an A.B. in history in 1965. That same year she married Harvey H. Cohen and they have two sons together.
Mrs. Cohen received fellowships for graduate study from Temple University, as well as the University of Delaware and the University of Maryland. Her husband obtained a job in the Chicago area, hence they moved to the mid-west. While working full time (at Standard Oil of Indiana in the credit card operation) and going to school at night, she obtained another fellowship from the University of Chicago and then graduated with a Master's Degree in Social Sciences in 1970. She completed this while working as the Acquisitions Head for the University of Chicago Law Library.
They returned to the Philadelphia area later that year and she started her career with Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. After many different assignments, she was promoted to Product Planning Manager and began to work in industry meetings as well.
In 1978, Mrs. Cohen was recruited by the Prudential Life Insurance Company to work in the Corporate Headquarters in Newark, NJ, starting as Marketing Director in the Ordinary Agencies Department. She was given many different assignments with increasing responsibilities including Director Marketing Systems, Vice President Market Analysis in the Actuarial Department. She also served on the Strategic Planning & Organization Study. She was then assigned to the Comptroller's Department as Vice President Tax Administration. Next Mrs. Cohen served as Vice President Market Development for four years to test and develop new forms of distribution for the company's insurance products as well as some new businesses for Prudential.
In 1988-90, she served as Vice President Enterprise Planning and then Senior Vice President Individual Pensions in Pruco Life (a Prudential subsidiary). She returned to the main Company in 1993 as Vice President and Annuity Services Executive.
All during her career at Prudential, she worked on Industry Committees, was a speaker at conferences and obtained many certifications including Charter Life Underwriter (C.L.U.), Fellow Life Management Institute (FLMI), LIMRA Life Institute and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC).
After many years in the financial services industry, Mrs. Cohen's goal in retirement was to "give back" to her community.
She started her own company (Welcoming Services LLC), the purpose of which was to provide new homeowners with community information as well as acquaint them with an array of businesses a new homeowner would need.
She served as an Elder at Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church in West Windsor, NJ. In addition, she also serves on the Finance Committee, the Marketing Committee and the Landscaping Committee where they live now in Princeton Windrows. Mrs. Cohen appeared as a speaker on the Women's Panel in Windrows in 2017.
Her career and civic related activities includes being a past member of the Jersey City State College, which recognized her as Executive of the Year in 1986. She also served as a member of the Board of Visitors of St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC. She was a Republican Committeewoman in West Windsor from 1995-2009, when Mrs. Cohen became the Vice Chairman of that group.
In addition she served on West Windsor's Affordable Housing Committee from 1997 to 2010, serving as Chairman the last two years.
As an active member of the Princeton Corridor Rotary Club from 1997 - 2012, she served as Chairman of the Service Committee and on the Chapter's Board. She was given a Paul Harris Award in 2007.
Mrs. Cohen has been a member of Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church for over 24 years and has served as a Deacon as well an Elder for three terms including Chairman of the Mission Committee and Chairman of Congregational Life and Fellowship Committee.
For over 19 years, Mrs. Cohen was a member of the Board of Directors for Project Freedom (a non-profit that builds housing for the physically disabled as well as offering support services). She served on the Finance Committee as well as Chairman of the Personnel Committee. She won their Spirit Award and in 2014, Project Freedom honored her with their Angel Award.
In 2018, after 17 years of working with the Mayor of West Windsor, appearing numerous times before the Planning Board and the Town Council to advocate for building a Project Freedom Apartment Complex in West Windsor, it finally came to fruition. Mrs. Cohen was invited to attend the ground breaking ceremony. The project will provide 72 homes for affordable housing and the disabled.
Prudential honored her work in retirement with a Community Champions Award in 2001, 02, 03, 04 and 05, and with a Major Award from Prudential Cares in 2007-2008.
For an inviting community spirit and generous civic service, Mrs. Cohen was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women, and the 1987 to 1988 Volume of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. Mrs. Cohen enjoys reading, cooking, gardening, taking long walks, yoga, collecting art and travelling.
