Mr. McCartney graduated from Princeton University in 1956 (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa). He attended Harvard Law School on a Princeton Fellowship and received a JD degree there (cum laude) in 1959.
Mr. McCartney enjoyed 41 years of success and enjoyment in the practice of law, from 1959 through 1999, with the Pittsburgh-based firm of Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott. He was a partner there from 1965 through mid-1993, when he resigned from the partnership to focus mainly on charitable and civic pursuits while continuing to serve the firm and clients in a part-time, "Of Counsel" role until fully retiring on December 31, 1999.
His legal work spanned many fields, including litigation, antitrust law, real estate development, government and private contracting, and international transactions. However, it eventually focused mainly on corporate administration and finance and on contract negotiations for business enterprises, large and small, domestic and overseas-based. His principal clients for many years were national homebuilder Ryan Homes, Inc. and real estate developer Wilmar Group and affiliates, which he served as Secretary and General Counsel. He also has engaged as a principal in several businesses.
Over his lifetime, Mr. McCartney has been active in the service of Princeton University. Among other roles, he has been President of the University's Alumni Association, and Chairman of its Alumni Council. He also co-chaired the Special Alumni Committee for the planning of the 250th Anniversary. He remains actively involved in fundraising tasks, including of the Planning Giving Advisory Committee and Alumni Giving.
In Western Pennsylvania, Mr. McCartney continues to devote time and effort to the musical theater production and education work of the Pittsburgh CLO, of which he is a former President and remains a life Director. He serves also the United Methodist Foundation of Western Pennsylvania as a former Chairman and a Board member since 1971.
During various periods he was also a member of the governing boards of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the Pennsylvania Southwest Association, the YMCA, the North Pittsburgh Community Development Corp., the McCandlers Industrial Development Authority, the McCandlers Township Government Study Commission, the Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theater (PICT), the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale, and Otterbein University.
