He has been a leader of his field in both Birmingham and New York, and contributed to many publications to the field of legal discourse. Furthermore, he served as the principal representative to the U.N. for the International Bar Association from 1993 to 2010. Mr. Baker also served with the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957.
In 1932, Mr. Baker was born in Durham, North Carolina to Roger Denio and Eleanor Elizabeth Baker. He attended the University of Chicago, earning a bachelor's degree in philosophy before matriculating at Birmingham-Southern College for a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. Mr. Baker earned a JD from Harvard University in 1954, and left to serve with the U.S. Army. In 1957, he accepted a position with Cabaniss & Johnston as an associate, where he stayed until 1962.
Mr. Baker later found a post in New York City with the firm of Chadbourne, Parke, Whiteside & Wolff, and in 1967, he was made partner at the firm. In 1986, he left to become a partner at Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue, and in 1993, he became one of the principal partners of Afridi, Angell, & Baker. In 1997, Mr. Baker formed another partnership at Gersen, Baker & Wood LLP, and in 1998, he became a partner at Baker, Johnston & Wilson LLP, serving in both Birmingham and New York until 2003. He accepted a position of counsel for Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker until 2014. In 2011, Mr. Baker became of counsel for Kayser & Redfern.
Mr. Baker became deeply involved in both Birmingham and New York, serving as president of the New York Legislative Service from 1975 to 1998 and as chairman after that. He was a director of Junior Achievement of New York from 1973 to 1999, and a director of Junior Achievement of Greater Birmingham from 1999 to 2007. He was a member of the board of Musica Viva NY from 1991 to the present time and served as president from 1994 to 1996. He served as general counsel for the Economic Club of New York from 1977 to 2011. He was a Trustee of Birmingham-Southern College from 1985 to 2013. He has also served as co-editor of "Due Diligence: Disclosures and Warranties in the Corporate Acquisition Practice" and submitted chapters to many publications.
In the course of a dedicated legal career, Mr. Baker has come to be a part of many organizations, notably the liaison for the committee of financial accounting standards at the American Bar Association, the Alabama Law Institute, the New York State Bar Association, the Association of Lloyd's Members, the Birmingham Bar Association, the American Law Institute, the American Arbitration Association, the Metropolitan Club of New York City, and the Harvard Club of New York City. He served the International Bar Association diligently in various positions from the late '80s through 2013, and in 2009, his alma mater Birmingham-Southern College honored him with an LLD, honoris causa. Mr. Baker was selected for inclusion in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, and the 1992 to 1993 volume of Who's Who in Finance and Industry. He also likes to play bridge.
