Additionally, since 2005 he has been an Assistant Professor at Kwangwoon University. Dr. An has contributed more than 150 articles to scientific journals in his field of expertise. He also holds 50 patents and has received 10M dollar in grants over the years. He received Best Paper Awards from the Journal of Korea Robotics Society (2010), the IEEE Haptic Symposium (2010), the Korea Robotics Society Annual Conference (2015) and the IARIA eKNOW (2016). He attributes his professional success to intelligence, diligence, creativity, and collaboration.
Dr. An previously served as Director of the Pragmatic Applied Robotics Institute from 2009-2012, as a Researcher with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology from 1997-2005, as Chief Technology Officer of TAN Company from 2003-2004, as Visiting Scholar at Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt from 2000-2001, and as a Researcher with KIA Motors Corp. from 1993-1994. He chose a career in research, teaching, and engineering because collaborating with various people, as well as studying nature and the environment, can positively contribute to one's community as well as all humankind.
Dr. An has and/or continues to lend his expertise to various committees such as the Robot Convergence Forum and Dual Use Program Center organized by Ministry of Knowledge & Economy, the Center of Human-centered Interaction for Coexistence founded by Ministry of Education, Science, & Technology, the Robot Convergence Forum organized by Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy, the Center of Human-centered Interaction for Coexistence and the Forum of Technology Commercialization & Transfer Policy founded by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning. Dr. An was also a Management Review Board member of the National Research Council of Science & Technology. Today, he continues in his role as an Advisory Review Board Member of the Presidential Committee on Regional Development and as a Technical Committee Member of Korea Industrial Standard Certification.
Dr An's research interests which include neurorehabilitation, neurohaptics, and swarm intelligence, have led him to memberships with numerous professional scientific organizations including The Society of IEEE Robotics and Automation, Association for Computing Machinery, Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems, Korean Society for Precision Engineering, Korea Robotics Society, The Korean Society of Medical & Biological Engineering, Korean Society of Medical Robotics, Human Computer Interaction Korea, Korea Society for the Emotional & Behavioral Disorders, Korean Psychological Association, The Korean Institute of Power Electronics, and Brain Engineering Society of Korea.
He holds a BS in Mechanical Design attained at Sungkyunkwan University in 1994, a MS in Mechanical Engineering attained at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 1997, and a PhD in Robotics attained from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 2005. He received full scholarships from Sungkyunkwan University (1989-1992) and TAN Co., Ltd. (2001-2004), and a Korean-German Government Scholarship for Research in Germany (2000), as well as two Korean Government Full Scholarships of KAIST (1995-1997 and 1997-2001).
Dr. An has been named to several editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in Asia in 2012 and Who's Who in the World every year from 2009 to 2017. He has served as a Deacon at Susoek Presbyterian Church since 2009, having previously held that role at Yeongsin Presbyterian Church from 2005-2008. Dr. An is married to Heran Lee, with whom he has two children: Yieun An; Yiryeong An.
