TALLAHASSEE, FL, August 11, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ada Puryear Burnette, Ph.D., has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Burnette embarked on a career in education after spending part of her senior year as an exchange student at Cedar Crest College and earning a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Talladega College in 1953. Degree in hand, she took on her first role as a high school mathematics teacher in Winston-Salem, N.C., at Atkins High School, a school from which she graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1950. She held this position for one year. She married and moved to Chicago, IL where she served as an elementary school teacher for Chicago Public Schools for four years. Dr. Burnette completed postgraduate coursework at Chicago State University in 1956, and two years later, in 1958, earned a Master of Arts in reading from the University of Chicago where she taught while earning the degree. That same year, she became the founding director of the reading clinic and an assistant professor at Norfolk State University. Dr. Burnette then assumed the position of assistant professor and reading clinic director for Tuskegee Institute, a role in which she served for five years.
Over the past more than 60 years, Dr. Burnette has held several positions in the education field, including assistant professor at Fisk University, administrator for early childhood basic skills and elementary education for the State of Florida Department of Education (first African American administrator since Reconstruction), and professor, department chairman, and professor emerita with Florida A&M University, and associate professor and coordinator of off-campus programs at Valdosta State University. During this time, Dr. Burnette added to her educational background by earning a Ph.D. from Florida State University and completing postgraduate coursework at Oxford University and Florida A&M University. She gave three lectures in different years at Oxford University. She returned to Florida A&M University from which she retired in 2011 and for which she was Faculty Senate President.
Dr. Burnette is or was a member of several professional organizations and remains current in her field through her affiliations with the American Association of University Women, the American Academy of Certified Public Managers, the Florida Society of Certified Public Managers, the National Association of African American Studies and Affiliates, the American Association of School Administrators, the Association for Childhood Education International, the Alliance of Black School Educators, the Association of State Consultants on Early Childhood Education, the Florida State Reading Association, and many more.
In addition to her role as an educator, Dr. Burnette served as a radio talk show hostess from 1977 to 1979. She was also a weekly columnist for Capital Outlook from 1991 to 1997, and served as a regular columnist for several professional journals since 1975. Dr. Burnette wrote and received a number of grant proposals and contributed articles to professional publications.
Dr. Burnette was given the Senior Star by the Senior Center in Tallahassee in 2016. In recognition of her professional efforts, she was featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women. Since second grade and through now, she has held leadership positions in organizations including her current presidency in two organizations. She has lead additions and changes in foreign countries also.
