After accruing nearly 45 years of experience in the field of child psychiatry, Dr. Shems retired from her role as an early intervention consultant for the Community Council for Mental Health/Mental Retardation, Inc., where she worked from 1981 until 2002. Earlier in her career, she served as a rotating intern at Lankenau Hospital. Years later, she held the roles of assistant instructor in the department of psychiatry for the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Irving Schwartz Institute for Children and Youth. Additionally, she has held a consulting and teaching position at the Institute of Pediatrics of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing.
An alumna of Lynchburg College and the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, Dr. Shems holds a Bachelor of Science, an MD, and an honorary Doctor of Science. In order to remain active in her professional circles, she has affiliated herself with the American Orthopsychiatric Association, the American Medical Women's Association, the Medical Women's International Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Psychiatric Physicians of Pennsylvania. Beyond her status as a respectable and hardworking figure in her industry, she has earned many awards for her work in the field, including being named one of the Outstanding Women in Pennsylvania and America.
