Mr. Riley has led a successful career for over 50 years in financial services with such prestigious companies as Prudential and American Express. He is the author of his autobiography "Piercing the Irish Ceiling" released in 2011, documenting his success in the Boston investment community despite historic prejudices against Irish Catholics. Mr. Riley was recognized for his financial acumen with numerous awards, and now devotes much of his time to working with nonprofit organizations in his community.
Born in Boston, MA, to Edward Gerard and Nina Loretta (Wolfe) Riley in 1930, Mr. Riley graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1951 and earned an MBA from Harvard University in 1953. He served to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy from 1953 through 1962. It wasn't until 1970 that Mr. Riley got his big break at Putnam Management, where he climbed the ladder to the position of vice chairman and chief executive officer. He led the company for ten years, concurrently leading Marsh and McLennan Asset Management from 1974 to 1981.
From 1981 to 1983, Mr. Riley served as senior vice president of American Express. He was instrumental in initiating a large acquisition by the company, which contributed to its eventual spinoff as a successful financial firm.
In 1983, Mr. Riley joined Prudential Insurance Company of America, where he became president of Prudential Asset Management Co. In 1986, he became chairman of Prudential Realty Group, subsequently holding chief executive officer positions with Prudential Residential Services and Prudential Reinsurance Company. In 1995, Mr. Riley went on to serve as president and chief operating officer of The Dreyfus Corporation. In 1998, he joined Joseph P. Kennedy Enterprises as CEO, where he served until 2005. That year, Mr. Riley became a managing director of J.W. Childs Associates, where he served through 2009.
Today, Mr. Riley is a member of the finance committee of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He also serves as director and member of the investment committee of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, as well as associate trustee of Boston College High School, and former member of the investment committee of the College of the Holy Cross. For many years of financial service, Mr. Riley was named 1975 and 1979 Chief Executive of the Year by Financial World Magazine, and has received the Silver Medal from Axiom Business Book Awards. He was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World, as well as the 1987 to 1988 volume of Who's Who in Finance and Industry and the 2009 to 2010 volume of Who's Who in Finance and Business. Mr. Riley is married to Carol (Anthony) Riley and the father of Robert, David, Thomas, Michael and Brian Riley.
