A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Oxford University, Dr. Makinen holds a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, an MD, and a DPhil in molecular biophysics. In order to remain engage and active in his professional circles, he affiliates himself with the American Chemical Society, the Biophysics Society, the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
A contributor to numerous articles in professional journals, Dr. Makinen has been recognized many times for his work in the field. In addition to earning fellowships through the National Institutes of Health and the Freie Universitat Berlin, Dr. Makinen has been featured in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
