For more than three decades Dr. Hsu has been an educator and a researcher into engineering applications for chemistry. His research focus is on hydrogels, mortars, copolymers, and other water-soluble substances that can potentially be used as ceramics, concrete or building materials. In 1994, he was awarded Best Paper by the Journal of Nuclear Energy Quarterly. Dr. Hsu currently holds patents in his field, and is a professor with the National Taiwan Normal University.
Dr. Hsu earned a Bachelor of Science in 1977 and a Master of Science in 1979 from National Taiwan University. From 1979 to 1981, he served as a lieutenant with Combined Logistics Command in Taipei. The organization provides services commonly needed by Taiwan's armed forces, such as surveying, engineering, and armament testing. Dr. Hsu traveled to the U.S. in 1981, earning a PhD from Pennsylvania State University. Upon graduation, he returned to Taiwan to become a senior engineer with China Steel Corp in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. In 1987, he transitioned to the role of associate scientist, and in 1990, Dr. Hsu became an associate professor at National Taiwan Normal University, where he earned the position of chair of the chemistry department in 2008.
Though the majority of his work is in Chinese, Dr. Hsu also holds patents in the U.S. His achievements include research into the synthesis and applications of dispersing agents for ceramic materials and concrete. He has written papers on the subject of copolymers as dispersing agents, as well as amphoteric hydrogels as internal curing agents. Dr. Hsu is a life member of the Polymer Society in Taipei and the Chinese Chemistry Society. In honor of his achievements in the sciences, he was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in the World, as well as the 2007 and 2012 volumes of Who's Who in Asia. He enjoys classical music and swimming.
