As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Though Dr. Lee is licensed by the Republic of Korean government as an oceanographer, he can properly be called a sedimentologist, or a scientist who studies sand, silt, and clay, as well as the processes of erosion and weathering that contributes to marine geology. He is currently with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, formerly the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute, as a principal research scientist, and has served as an adjunct professor of the Korea Maritime and Ocean University since 2013. Understanding the movements of sediment allows Dr. Lee to monitor the movement of the ocean, track the impact of human constructs, and follow the growth of beneficial and malicious microorganisms in the sea.
Born in the capital city to Wan Shik and Gye Hoon Lee, Dr. Lee was exempt from the Korean military due to poor eyesight, and studied at the Seoul National University to earn a Bachelor's degree in 1980. In 1985, he became a researcher with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, formerly the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute, and was appointed senior researcher in 1991 when he earned a Ph.D. degree from the Seoul National University. Since 1997, Dr. Lee has served as principal research scientist for the institute while pursuing other avenues of research. In 1995, he conducted postdoctoral studies with Colorado University's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, and from 2001 to 2005, he joined the National Research Laboratory of Coastal Sedimentary Dynamics in Ansan, Republic of Korea. He has served as an editor for the Journal of the Geological Society of Korea, as well as the Journal of the Oceanological Society of Korea, the Geosciences Journal, and the Ocean Science Journal.
As part of his studies of sedimentology, Dr. Lee constructed one of Korea's first autonomous instruments for monitoring sediment transport near the seafloor, called TISDOS, which has allowed him to publish over 50 papers on the various shifts surrounding the seas of Korea. The journey has taken him over tidal flats, estuaries, continental shelves, as well as beaches and surf zones. Dr. Lee was presented with a 2009 Presidential Prize in Science award, and is a member of the Oceanological Society of Korea. He was a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Society for Sedimentary Geology, and the International Association of Sedimentologists. He was selected for inclusion in eight volumes of Who's Who in the world, four volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, as well as the 2007 volume of Who's Who in Asia. Dr. Lee married Sun Ok Kim in 1985, and has two children: Key Hyun Lee and Soo Ah Lee. He enjoys the game of Go and mountaineering.
