Dr. Alqahtani's achievements have been recognized with a 2015 Mark Platt MD Graduating Residency Award in neurology from The George Washington University. He attributes his success to the love and support of his family. George Washington University's School of Medicine and Health Sciences is one of the oldest medical schools in the country and Dr. Alqahtani's alma mater. He conducted his doctoral work at the university hospital from 2011 to 2015, where developed an expertise in neurology. Dr. Alqahtani was one of the three distinguished alumni to graduate from George Washington in 2015.
After completion of a neurology residency, he joined the vascular neurology fellowship program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Bethesda, USA where he specialized in neurovascular diseases and stroke. During his vascular fellowship, his focus was toward hyper-acute stroke neuroimaging with emphasis of developing a new neuroimaging technique. In 2015, Dr. Alqahtani led a research team and discovered a novel way of imaging an acute and active bleeding within the brain using the advanced magnetic resonance imaging technology. His discovery provides a direct assessment of the bleeding source within the brain tissue and its activity. He also focused on important subtypes of strokes called anterior choroidal artery strokes and he described the small but critical abnormal perfusion deficit within these strokes and its association with patient's clinical outcome. His discovery was the first to assess and directly visualized these abnormalities; this might help optimizing the clinical care of these patients. His finding was published in Journal of Stroke & Cerebrovascular Diseases on April 2, 2017.
Dr. Alqahtani actively participated in the NIH/NINDS clinical researches including the Evaluation, Pathogenesis, and Treatment of Patients with or at Risk for Cerebrovascular Disease. Dr. Alqahtani is dual board certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
