A board certified diagnostic radiologist who specialized in vascular radiology, Dr. Eckstein has extensive experience with angioplasty. Among the early vascular radiologists of her time, she used balloon catheters and special sizes manufactured to open long segment stenosis for leg salvage procedures. The results of her work later included the design and development of her own line of vascular catheters.
Earning a Bachelor's degree at Vassar College in 1970, followed by an MD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1973, Dr. Eckstein completed her internship in medicine and residency in diagnostic radiology at Yale-New Haven Medical Center. She became an assistant radiologist and, later, associate radiologist and chief of the vascular radiology section at South Nassau Communities Hospital before becoming an assistant director in the department of radiology in 1981. From 1981 to 1983, she served on the executive committee and as hospital chairman of the United Jewish Appeal of Physicians and Dentists of Nassau County, New York She also taught as an assistant professor of clinical radiology at State University of New York, Stony Brook Medical School from 1980 to 1983. She then joined the staff at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA in the Vascular Radiology Section where she was an assistant radiologist from 1983 to 1987 followed by associate radiologist from 1987 to 2013 as well as an instructor of radiology at Harvard Medical School from 1983 to 1984 and an assistant professor in the same department from 1984 to 2013 when she officially retired.
Dr. Eckstein has published 21 original papers for Archives of Surgery, Current Controversies in Thoracic Surgery, Topics in Uroradiology, and The American College of Radiology Planning Guide For Radiographic Installations, among various others. They include "Amino acid oxidase of leukocytes in relation to H202-mediated bacterial killing" (which was written when she was a Vassar College student and discovered L-amino acid oxidase), "Gastrointestinal bleeding: An angiographic perspective" and "Gastric bleeding: Therapy with intraarterial vasopressin and transcatheter embolization."
She has conducted 55 lectures across the country between 1977 and 1986 on such subjects as "Digital subtraction angiography: principles and current applications," "Angiography in the diagnosis of trauma," "Intraarterial thrombolysis, "Transcatheter embolization: A practical and rational approach," "Vascular interventional procedures" and "Streptokinase - urokinase therapy for peripheral vascular thrombosis." Finding time to write for pleasure, she also authored and edited "Autobiography of Marc Eckstein," about her father, which was completed in 2014.
A fellow of the American College of Angiology and associate fellow of the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, Dr. Eckstein is a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Radiology, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the American Association of Women Radiologists, the Massachusetts Radiological Society, and many others. She is also a life member of Hadassah since 1973, and was honored with a Hadassah Love-of-a-Lifetime Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1997.
For her writings, Dr. Eckstein was the recipient of an award in a poetry contest for an original poem, called "Yearnings." The poem was later published in "Great Poems of the Western World" Vol. II, in 1990 by World of Poetry Press. In her leisure time, Dr. Eckstein loves to tinker with computers and technical equipment.
