After more than 60 years in aeronautics and engineering, Dr. Reshotko now holds the title of Kent H. Smith professor emeritus with Case Western Reserve University, having previously served as a Kent H. Smith professor of engineering for more than a decade prior to retirement. He is a well-known contributor of articles to technical journals, and a pioneering researcher in the '50s of supersonic aerodynamics and problems in the compressible boundary layer. Dr. Reshotko later headed the plasma physics branch of the NASA-Lewis Research Center as chief and supervisor of theoretical and experimental work in plasma propulsion, as well as plasma physics and magnetohydrodynamics.
Dr. Reshotko was born in New York City to Max and Sarah Reshotko, and graduated from the celebrated Bronx High School of Science in 1946. He received a B.M.E from the school of engineering at Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1950, and later earned an M.M. E. in heat power engineering and machine design at Cornell University in 1951 and a PhD in aeronautics and physics at the California Institute of Technology in 1960 as the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Fellow in Jet Propulsion. Early in his career, Dr. Reshotko served the NASA-Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory as an aeronautical research engineer, going on to head the fluid mechanics section, the high temperature plasma section and ultimately becoming chief of the plasma physics branch. He joined the Case Institute of Technology in 1964, where he served as an associate professor of engineering for two years before he was promoted to professor of engineering in 1966. At Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Reshotko served as the chairman of the department of fluid thermal and aerospace sciences for six years and as the chairman of the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering for three years. He briefly filled the role of dean of the Case Institute of Technology from 1986 to 1987, and received the Kent H. Smith Professorship in 1988, followed by the title of professor emeritus in 2000.
Dr. Reshotko has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World, as well as the seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education and the second through 12th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Dr. Reshotko has received numerous awards in recognition of his contributions to aerospace engineering. In 1980, he was the recipient of the Fluid and Plasma Dynamics Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 1990 he delivered the Joseph Wunsch Lecture at the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology. In 1994 he delivered the Dryden Lecture in Research for the American Institute of Aeronautics and at the turn of the century he received the Otto Laporte Award in Fluid Dynamics from the American Physical Society. In 2016, Dr. Reshotko was inducted into the NASA-Glenn Hall of Fame, and in 2017 he was designated an Aerospace Engineering Honorary Engineer of the Texas A&M University.
Although Dr. Reshotko is now retired, he continues to remain active and engaged in the field of engineering as a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Reshotko is a recognized member of the NAE, Ohio Science and Engineering Roundtable, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma. He continues to serve the scientific community as a consultant, particularly as a member of the NRC/NASA Aeronautical Research and Technology Round Table.
