As a professor with the University of Minnesota, Dr. Collins is responsible for teaching veterinary pathology to veterinary and graduate students, in addition to researching infectious diseases of animals and humans. He is also an advisory board member of Zepto Life Technology, LLC, which provides human and veterinary diagnostic services. In this position, Dr. Collins is responsible for assisting staff with diagnostic methodology, as well as selection and development.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Collins has been continually noted for his personal drive, communication skills, willingness to learn and incorporate, innovation and drive. He was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by his brother, who now teaches at the University of Wisconsin. Upon receiving a veterinary degree at the University of Minnesota in 1978, Dr. Collins went on to complete a PhD in pathology at Michigan State University in 1986. He holds numerous licenses and has been board certified in veterinary pathology since 1983.
A dedicated researcher, Dr. Collins holds many patents, including one for a kit for detecting swine infertility and respiratory syndrome, SIRS vaccine and diagnostic methods, and the immunogenic composition containing inactivated swine infertility and respiratory syndrome virus. He maintains active involvement with a wide range of organizations, including the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and United States Animal Health Association, as well as the academic health center of the University of Minnesota.
