Dr. Brown currently works as a senior environmental scientist for Adapt Engineering, a local, privately owned, Pacific Northwest Engineering firm that provides clients with a complete range of geotechnical, environmental, and consulting services since 2009. Furthermore, Dr. Brown is the owner of his own private practice, Metric Matters, since 2004, and has been in the industry for more than 35 years.
Completing a BS in Chemistry at Colorado State University, as well as an MS and PhD at Florida State University within a five-year span, Dr. Brown began working in the field at Texas Tech University in 1980. He later worked for several other companies, including the Heart Interface Corporation as a staff scientist, Brooks Rand Ltd. as a consultant and a senior scientist, and Northwest Aluminum Technologies as a research manager. In 2007, he was taken on board at Adapt Engineering as a project manager, and within two years, he was promoted into his current position.
Dr. Brown was involved with the American Boat and Yacht Council in Edgewater, MD, as a member of the marine battery charger/inverter project technical committee in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He also did consulting work for several years on mercury speciation with the Environmental Protection and Department of Energy. Furthermore, he was the manager of the inert anode aluminum production research project from 1996 to 2004.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Brown has contributed articles to various professional journals, including the Physical Review Letters, the Journal of Chemical Physics, the Journal of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, and Light Metals. He has also contributed book reviews to Photochemistry and Photobiology, as well as various conference proceedings. His work has included the design of power inverters and battery chargers, the design of spectrophotometric instruments, numerous patents for low temperature aluminum smelting, patents for a switched multi-tapped transformer power conversion method and apparatus, research in chemical physics, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, aluminum production, chemical sensors, and environmental assessments.
Dr. Brown was an honors scholar through the University of Denver from 1971 to 1972, a Whiteford scholar and Gustavson teaching fellow through Colo. State University from 1974 to 1975, and a Welch postdoctoral fellow through Texas Tech University from 1980 to 1983. He also received a research grant by the Department of Energy from 1994 to 1996, as well as an award by the Innovative Concepts Program from 1997 to 1998.
