Ms. Poulton has served Baltimore area parents and children since 1964 as a nurse specializing in maternal child health. She is proud of her "thousands of children," the many patients she has helped and who fill her scrapbooks with beautiful memories. Since 2004, she has served as a school nurse at Mother Seton Academy in Baltimore and volunteers with the Dining Service Committee.
A native of the Monumental City, Ms. Poulton was born to Charles Robert and Mary Doris Poulton and studied with Maryland General Hospital. She was inspired to the field by her parents and her grandmother, Gladys Flickster. In her first year with Maryland General, her instructor Shirley Wolfe inspired her to go on to Project Hope, a nonprofit global health education and humanitarian assistance organization. After serving with the hospital as a staff nurse from 1964 to 1967, Ms. Poulton joined Project Hope to offer nursing care in Columbia and Tunisia.
In 1968, Ms. Poulton joined St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore as a staff nurse, and was recognized with a team leader position in 1972. She served in this role until 1983, when she became a preceptor at the hospital. In 1988, Ms Poulton was appointed nurse manager of the pediatric emergency room and ambulatory services, a role that brought her closer to children. It inspired her to take continuing courses, and in 1993, St. Agnes appointed her pediatrics hemophilia coordinator, a role she held until 2003. She also served in this capacity at John Hopkins from 1996 until 2003.
Hemophilia is generally inherited, and prevents the body from creating clots to stop bleeding. Some patients require clotting factor therapy, which is preferably administered at home by a trained nurse like Ms. Poulton to prevent exposure to injury. Ms. Poulton studied hemophilia nursing at Johns Hopkins, and instructs other nurses in the technique. She has likely saved countless lives.
For her many years of medical excellence, Ms. Poulton was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who of American Women, as well as two volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, two volumes of Who's Who in American Nursing, two volumes of Who's Who in the World, and one volume each of Who's Who in the East and Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals. This year, she also received the Geri Award from The Maryland Senior Hall of Fame.
