Mr. Turnquist, an American public school educator and journalist, began his journey as a history and science teacher at School District University in Elgin, Ill., in 1972, just after completing an Associate's degree at Elgin Community College and a Bachelor's degree at Northern Illinois University. Well-known in his community as a very passionate lecturer, writer, and historian, Mr. Turnquist served as chairman for the Elgin Heritage Commission, is a member and former board of directors of more than 10 years for the Elgin Area Historical Society, served as trustee for the Gail Borden Public Library of Elgin, and, since 2009, has been president of the Elgin Patriotic Memorial Association. He spent time as a columnist for the Daily Herald in Elgin since 1995, and as co-host of "Elgin 100 Years Ago," a local radio show on WRMN, also since 1995.
Additionally, Mr. Turnquist founded the Elgin New Citizen Recognition Committee in 1999, a group comprised of community volunteers, including representatives from Centro de Informacion, Elgin Community College, and The Literacy Connection. The purpose of the organization is to welcome and celebrate the diversity of new citizens in the community. Recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of Elgin College, Mr. Turnquist was also named Keyman of the Year by Elgin Junior Chamber of Commerce and was the recipient of an Outstanding Service Award by the Elgin Heritage Commission.
From 1977-2015, Mr. Turnquist worked as a tax professional in Elgin. He also holds a Master's degree from Northern Illinois University and has been highlighted in more than a dozen Who's Who in America publications and several editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World. Married to Kathleen A. Turnquist since 1984, the pair has two adopted children: Dennis and Eric.
