BOWIE, MD, September 21, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Josefino Cacas Comiso, PhD a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Comiso celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Comiso has been a leading physical scientist with the Goddard Space Flight Center and NASA since 1979, and has worked on research related to climate change ever since. He was instrumental on a global project observing the planet for rapidly declining perennial sea ice cover, and produced a paper on the subject that has been cited over one thousand times. Dr. Comiso's work has revealed the extraordinary rate at which Arctic ice is affected by global warming, at approximately three times the intensity of the global average.

Born in Narvacan, of the Philippines, to Severino Comiso and Silvestra Cacas, Dr. Comiso initially wanted to be a doctor of medicine, but was involved in a car accident as a youth and broke his femur. His education was interrupted for two years, and when he returned, a subsequent aptitude test helped point him toward mathematics and physics as a career. Dr. Comiso earned a BS in Physics with the University of the Philippines, and was offered a position immediately by the Philippine Atomic Research Center. The Feynman diagrams were a source of initial inspiration for Dr. Comiso, and directed his interest in particle physics.

Dr. Comiso went on to teach at the University of the Phillippines, and traveled to the U.S. in 1964. He earned an MS in Physics from Florida State University, and went on to the University of California, Los Angeles, to earn a PhD in 1972. Dr. Comiso served the university as an assistant research physicist, transitioning to the University of Virginia in 1973 and to the Computer Sciences Corporation in Maryland during the late '70s. He accepted a position at NASA in 1979.

Dr. Comiso's achievements with NASA include space-based assessments of surface temperature, tracking sea ice distribution, and observation of phytoplankton blooms in the Earth's polar regions. These and other advances helped form his work in 2010, titled "Polar Oceans from Space." Dr. Comiso is particularly excited to be working in a field that can have profound impacts on human society. He has been prolific having been the author or co-author of 6 books, 20 book chapters and more than 130 refereed journal publications and has been one of the coordinating lead authors of the 2014 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report which is regarded as one of the most authoritative documents on climate change.

For his achievements in physical science, Dr. Comiso has been awarded NASAs Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal and Career Achievement Award as well as the Pan Oceanic Remote Sensing Conference Outstanding Achievement in Science Award. He has also been named fellow of the Japan Society for Promotion of Science, a member of the Electromagnetics Academy and the Philippine-American Academy of Science and Technology and a corresponding member of the Philippine National Academy of Science and Technology. He was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Comiso has three children with his wife, Diana Parrenas Jimenez, and has seven grandchildren.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Comiso has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
