Dr. Rubin has established himself as a reputable member of his field for his expertise in the understanding of child and adolescent behavioral development. His research is focused on topics such as social, emotional, and personality development; social cognition; play; aggression; social withdrawal, behavioral inhibition and shyness; peer relationships and friendship; parenting and parent-child relationships; and cross-cultural studies.
In 1995, Dr. Rubin established the Laboratory for the Study of Child and Family Relationships in the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology at the University of Maryland. The Laboratory, which has received over $10 million in Federal funding since 2000, has focused on research promoting an understanding of child and adolescent social and emotional development. Current research is focused on projects such as the development of pro-social/adaptive and anti-social/maladaptive behaviors in childhood and adolescence. Laboratory research focuses on parent-child relationships, cultural influences on parenting; predicting the outcomes of child and adolescent behavioral development from biological factors, context, parenting and parent-child and peer relationships; and the effects of traumatic brain injury on childhood psychological development.
More recently, with funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, the Laboratory has investigated whether early identification and intervention can prevent preschool-age children from developing anxiety disorders over the course of childhood and adolescence. The Laboratory, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, has also examined the effects early childhood exposure to theater on creativity and social competence.
Dr. Rubin is a Professor of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology, a University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher, and the founding director of the Center for Children, Relationships, and Culture at the University of Maryland. He has served in academia for more than 45 years. Prior to his work at the University of Maryland, he served as a professor at the University of Waterloo (Canada) for 22 years. He began his career as an assistant professor at the University of Windsor (Canada) in 1971.
Dr. Rubin also served in academia as a visiting scholar at multiple institutions, the College of Education at Stanford University, the University of Washington, and the Max-Planck-Institut fur Psychologische Forschung in Munich. He has been a visiting fellow at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia and a senior fellow at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Dr. Rubin graduated from Pennsylvania State University, State College with a PhD in 1971 and Master of Science in 1969. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in Montreal (1968).
Dr. Rubin is an editor and author of numerous books, book chapters, and research articles in professional journals. He has more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, including many which have been co-authored by colleagues in North and South America, Europe, South America, and Asia. He was among the first scholars to help develop a program of research on children's social and emotional development in the People's Republic of China. He is the author of the book "The Friendship Factor," (Penguin) in which he describes the importance of children's social development to their emotional and intellectual growth--and future success. The book won him the 2002 National Parenting Publications Gold Award in 2002.
Dr. Rubin is also the editor of multiple works, some of which include "Children's Peer Relations: Issues in Assessment and Intervention," published in 1985, which was the winner of the Joan Kershaw Publication Award as book of the year; "Parental Beliefs, Parenting, and Child Development in Cross-Cultural Perspective" in 2006; "L'isolamento sociale durante l'infanzia (Social withdrawal in childhood)," published in 2008; Social and Emotional Development (Critical Concepts in Psychology), published in 2009; "Handbook of Peer Interactions, Relationships, and Groups," published 2009 and the 2nd edition, published in 2018; "The Development of Shyness and Social Withdrawal," published in 2010; "Social Anxiety in Childhood: Bridging Developmental and Clinical Perspectives," published in 2010; "Socioemotional Development in Cultural Context," published in 2011; and the "Handbook of Child and Adolescent Aggression: Emergence, Development, and Intervention", which will be published in 2018. Dr. Rubin served as president, general secretary, and treasurer of the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development. He also served as a member of the governing council of the Society for Research in Child Development from 2009 to 2015, and as a member of the editorial boards of 10 professional journals. He was twice Associate Editor of "Child Development."
Dr. Rubin has received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions and research in his field. He has been honored as a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association of Psychological Sciences, and the Canadian Psychological Association. He is a Charter Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development, He was awarded a Killam Research Fellowship by the Canada Council and was also awarded a senior research fellowship from the Ontario Mental Health Foundation. He received the Distinguished Contributions to Knowledge Award by the Ontario Psychological Foundation; the Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Research and Theory in Behavioral Development Award from the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development; the American Psychological Association (Division 7) Mentor Award in Developmental Psychology; the Pickering Award for Outstanding Contribution to Developmental Psychology in Canada from Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada). The University of Maryland awarded him with a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Professorship. In 2015, Dr. Rubin received the Distinguished Contributions to Understanding International, Cultural, and Contextual Diversity in Child Development Award from the Society for Research in Child Development. In addition, Dr. Rubin has been featured in Who's Who in America.
Dr. Rubin is the son of Sonia and the late Jerry (Julius) Rubin. He is married to Margo A. Rubin; they have two children, Amy and Joshua.
