Drawing upon more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Shingu serves as a professor with the department of sociology at Nara University. Dr. Shingu maintains involvement with a wide range of industry-related organizations, including the Japan Writers' Association, Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology, Japan Psychoanalytical Association and Japan Society of Image Arts and Sciences. He also serves as a board member of the Japanese Society of Psychopathology, Japanese Society for the History of Psychiatry and Japanese Society of Psychopathology of Expression and Art Therapy, as well as an executive board member of the Japanese Association of Clinical Drawings.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Shingu has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in the World. In addition, he was selected as the recipient of the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities in 2000. Awarded by the Suntory Foundation, this honor is awarded each year to individuals who have made original, distinguished contributions in research or criticism through publications that adopt a broad perspective on society and culture. Dr. Shingu was previously awarded a Research Award from the Japan Society of Pathography in 1998.
Prior to pursuing a career in education, Dr. Shingu received a Bachelor of Medicine from Kyoto University in 1975. He went on to complete a residency at Kyoto University Hospital before serving as a psychiatrist with Otsu Red Cross Hospital and Kyoto-Minami-Teishin Hospital. Beginning in 1981, Dr. Shingu joined Kyoto University as an assistant in the institute for health and medical services. He later accepted a position as an assistant professor with the department of liberal arts at Kyoto University.
In 1991, Dr. Shingu transitioned into a role as an assistant professor of the graduate school of human and environmental studies. He was promoted to the position of professor in 1999, and remained with the university until joining Nara University in 2016.
