David Paul Hill Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Hill has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of geophysics

Dr. Hill has received numerous awards, fellowships, and commendations for outstanding contributions to his field and community.

MENLO PARK, CA, September 29, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name David Paul Hill a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Hill celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

For more than 50 years, Dr. Hill has established himself as a reputable member of his field for his expertise in seismology. He began his career as a geophysicist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Denver, Colorado, in 1961. From 1964 to 1966, Dr. Hill worked at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory as the staff seismologist and then as a research geophysicist in Pasadena and Menlo Park from 1966 to 1978. From 1978 to 1982 he served as Chief of the Seismology Branch in Menlo Park, California. He then served as Scientist-in-Charge of the Long Valley Observatory from 1982 to 2009, and senior research geophysicist from 2009 to 2010. In 1988, Dr. Hill was invited for a six-month sabbatical as a visiting professor at the Institute for Geophysics at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, doing research and some teaching. Since 2010, he has continued to work as a scientist emeritus in the USGS offices in Menlo Park.

Dr. Hill graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 1971 with a PhD in Geophysics. He also holds a Master in Science in geophysics from Colorado School of Mines and a Bachelor of Science in Geology from San Jose State University. He has more than 80 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals on topics in seismology, volcanology, and tectonics. His major research accomplishments include discovering that seismic waves (dynamic stresses) from large earthquakes can trigger smaller earthquakes at remote distances, that many earthquake swarms can be explained in terms of fluids in a "Hill-type" fracture mesh, plus the seismological properties of Long Valley Caldera, a large volcanic system in eastern California.

During his career with the USGS, Dr. Hill served as the first U.S. Chairman of the United States-Japan Resources Panel on Earthquake Research from 1979 to 1982 and a member of the panel through 2011. This panel was established to facilitate a global scientific exchange between government scientists working in the field of earthquake research in order to improve our understanding of the causes and effects of earthquakes and reduce their impact. At the request of the U.S. Navy, he traveled several times to Naples, Italy, to provide a USGS perspective on the hazards posed by the evolving 1984-1985 volcanic unrest at the NATO base within Campi Flegrei Caldera. For 33 years, he served the community in east-central California as a USGS representative for volcanic and earthquake hazards on the emergency response team of the Mono and Inyo Counties Unified Command. Dr. Hill has received numerous awards, fellowships, and commendations for outstanding contributions to his field and community. In 2002, the Mineralogical Society of America awarded him with the Distinguished Public Service Medal. The Department of Interior also commended him with the Meritorious Service Award and the Distinguished Service Award, and the United States Geological Survey honored Dr. Hill with the Eugene Shoemaker Communications Award and the Public Service Recognition Award. Dr. Hill is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Seismological Society of America. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Geophysical Research, the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, and the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. He was featured in Who's Who in the West, 26th edition.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Hill has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
