A practicing physician for more than 40 years, Dr. Heubi currently works as an associate dean for clinical and translational research and professor of pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine as well as director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training at the University of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. A diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics since 1979, Dr. Heubi's clinical work involves pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, and pediatric cholestatic liver disease, with research interests involving liver disease in childhood and its complications, inborn errors of bile acid metabolism, bone disease in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders, fat absorption, and cholesterol absorption and metabolism.
A former long-term program director for the National Institute of Health-funded General Clinical Research Center, and current principal investigator and co-investigator on NIH grants, Dr. Heubi participates in a local principal/co-investigator on two rare disease networks supported by the NIH. He has served on a number of committees at the University of Cincinnati, including the dean's committee on research, and the nutrition task force. Additionally, Dr. Heubi has served on a number of committees at the Children's Hospital Medical Center, as well as several extramural committees.
Dr. Heubi's research has resulted in the publication of more than 200 articles in professional journals, including Gastroenterology, Hepatology, the New England Journal of Medicine, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and the Journal of Pediatrics. He has been responsible for research in new defects of bile acid synthesis, which could now be treated medically. He has also been instrumental in increasing the understanding of the importance of early recognition of Reyes Syndrome and its effect on prognosis.
Remaining active on several organizations, such as the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Association of the Study of Liver Disease, and the American Pediatrics Society, Dr. Heubi has received numerous accolades for his dedication. Most recently, Dr. Heubi has earned a 2011 Daniel Drake Medal by the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, a 2010 Founders Award by the Cincinnati Pediatric Society, and a 2006 Founders Award by the Midwest Society for Pediatric Research.
After the completion of his undergraduate studies at Indiana University, Dr. Heubi went on to earn an MD at Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his internship in straight pediatrics, residency in pediatrics at James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana University, and fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at the Children's Hospital Medical Center. In 1990, he also became certified in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition.
Married to Margo A. Hungerford with two daughters, Dr. Heubi loves water sports, and enjoys reading in his down time. He has been highlighted in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education several times over the past 13 years.
