Mr. Burzo, a professor and dean at Babes-Bolyai University (BBU) for more than 25 years, has become well-renowned for his significant contributions and establishment of modern research in the field of solid state physics. Focusing much of his attention on experimental research and modeling of the properties for magnetic and superconducting materials, he has supervised countless young researchers in the faculty of physics at BBU, the oldest and largest university in the Romania.
Continuing to conduct scientific research at the age of 82, Mr. Burzo's career history dates back to 1958 when he first served as an engineer for the Carbochim Factory and later in the same capacity at BBU. Working for 20 years as a senior researcher for the Institute of Atomic Physics in Bucharest , he returned to BBU to begin his career in academia in 1990. Over the course of his near 60-year career, he has published approximately 450 papers, many of which were the result of international collaboration with researchers from France, Germany, the U.S., Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Russia, Moldova, Belguim, and Sweden. He has also presented 30 invited lectures at international conferences, and was invited to sustain plenary presentations at many national and international meetings and conferences.
Mr. Burzo has authored more than 20 books and chapters to books, including "Physics of Magnetic Phenomena" and co-authoring "Rare Earth Inter-metallic Compounds." Furthermore, Mr. Burzo served on editorial boards for eight international journals and two national magazines, including as deputy editor for the Romanian Journal of Physics and as section editor for Springer-Verlag Publishing Magnetism Heidelberg in NY.
For a brief time, Mr. Burzo taught as a professor at the University of Joseph-Fourier in Grenoble, as well as a consultant for the Institute of Electrical Engineering and director for Center Solid State Physics. A former member of the Commission for Academy Degree Ministry of Education in Bucharest, he remains active as a member of the Romanian Academy of Science and the Council Balkan Physical Union. Mr. Burzo is also a fellow of the Institute of Physics, and serves as current president of the Romanian Society of Magnetic Materials and the Romania Material Science Society.
Mr. Burzo earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at Technical University in 1958 and a Bachelor of Science in Physics at BBU in 1959. Throughout his career, he also received several recognitions, including an Award for Physics granted by the Romania Academy of Science, as well as The Excellence Award by the Hungarian Academy and an Opera Omnia Award by the Ministry of Education and Research, among others. He was also named to Who's Who in Science and Engineering and several editions of Who's Who in the World and received an honorary PhD by the University of Timisoara in Romania.
