BIRMINGHAM, AL, October 05, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Karl Raymond Seitz has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Seitz is a retired newspaper editor who devoted his professional life to the legacy publication Birmingham Post-Herald, serving as the editor of the editorial page and shepherding its last issue in 2005. The paper had roots reaching back to 1850, and Mr. Seitz was proud of the editorials he wrote for its pages. After the paper ceased circulation, he continued to be an active presence in his community as a member of Leadership Birmingham, an organization of leaders in the city.
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Kerlin McCullough and Martha Elisabeth Seitz, Mr. Seitz served with the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1964. He first lived in Birmingham as a student at the Birmingham Southern College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1970. Mr. Seitz joined the Birmingham Post-Herald as an undergraduate copy editor. The paper was already well known for having printed a photograph of the Ku Klux Klan attacking a Freedom Rider at the Trailways Bus Station just a few years before, at the height of the civil rights movement. The photographer, Tommy Langston, was attacked for his involvement in the affair, which helped identify several Klansmen involved in the assault.
Along with a degree, Mr. Seitz earned the position of assistant news editor and ultimately worked his way to editor of the editorial page in 1978. He continued the tradition of the Birmingham Post-Herald, and remembers covering the then all-white Shoal Creek Country Club in 1990, just before they were scheduled to host the PGA Championship. The Post-Herald incited threats of boycott, and Mr. Seitz said to Al.com in a 2015 interview that "We didn't worry about such things. We let the chips fall where they may." Ultimately, the paper was instrumental in changing policies at the country club and ran until 2005, when it was purchased and shut down by a competing newspaper. Mr. Seitz helped manage the Birmingham Post-Herald Typographical Union Pension Plan through 1990, and served as vice president of the charitable Goodfellow Fund Incorporated until it was dissolved after the Post-Herald ceased publication.
Mr. Seitz has been an active community leader, and in addition to Leadership Birmingham, he has served as an executive in residence with the Birmingham Southern College. He is a member of the Academy of Political Science and the former Association of Opinion Journalists, now part of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
Mr. Seitz was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and two volumes of Who's Who in the World. For a career of excellence in journalism, Mr. Seitz has been inducted into the listings of Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievement. He is married to Patricia Jean Floyd, and is the father of Lee Kerlin.
