For more than 50 years, Dr. Stanley has dedicated his life to the pursuit of musical excellence. He began playing piano at five years old, and continued to study music throughout his young life. While attending college, Dr. Stanley gained teaching experience as a piano instructor based in Saint Louis between 1958 and 1963. He also performed as a concert pianist during this time.
In the final year of his undergraduate education, Dr. Stanley played as a soloist with a concert orchestra. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Music from Washington University in 1963 and a Master of Music from Miami University in 1965, where he was then appointed as an instructor of music. He held this position for nearly a decade before he was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1973. He received further professional music certification through work at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Austria.
While teaching at Miami University, Dr. Stanley completed a PhD at the University of Cincinnati in 1983. Beginning in 1984, he became an associate professor, a position he held for two decades. He retired as Professor of Music Emeritus in 2004.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Stanley has maintained involvement with professional organizations, including Pi Kappa Lambda. He is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and served as Miami University chapter faculty advisor between 1971 and 1979. He is a former adjudicator for various youth music competitions in Ohio, as well as a former Visiting Scholar at the Miami University Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg. In recognition of his commitment to the field of music, Dr. Stanley was awarded numerous grants between 1977 and 1986, including the faculty grant for study in Austria from Miami University in 1977, a research grant in London and Brussels form Miami University in 1979, a development grant from Miami University in 1986, and an Ella Lyman Cabot Trust grant from Cambridge, MA, between 1983 and 1984.
A renowned musician and music educator, Dr. Stanley has authored several works in his areas of expertise, including "Historic Parallels in the Arts" and "William Holder: His Position in 17th Century Philosophy and Music Theory." His latest book is entitled "The Making of a Music Academy." He has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including the 8th edition of Who's Who in American Education, 3rd edition of Who's Who in Entertainment and 23rd edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.
