The son of Ashod Haroutioun and Keghinee Tiryakian, Dr. Tiryakian is a current professor emeritus at Duke University. In 1952, Dr. Tiryakian graduated from Princeton University with a BA, summa cum laude. He continued his studies at one of the most esteemed universities in the United States, Harvard University. Dr. Tiryakian obtained from this university a MA in 1954 and a PhD from 1956.
Dr. Tiryakian's career began with his work as an instructor for Princeton University. In 1957, he became an assistant at this same university. From 1962 to 1965, Dr. Tiryakian returned to Harvard University as a lecturer. He continued his work as an educator at Duke University, where he was an associate professor between 1965 and 1967 and a professor between 1967 and 2004.
From 1969 to 1972, Dr. Tiryakian was the chairman of the department of sociology and anthropology at Duke University. He also served as the director of international studies between 1988 and 1991. In 1987, Dr. Tiryakian attended Paris Descartes University in Paris, France, where he earned a PhD with honors. Along with his career, Dr. Tiryakian was a visiting lecturer at the University of Philippines from 1954 to 1955 and Bryn Mawr College from 1957 to 1959. He also was a visiting scientist for the American Sociological Association between 1967 and 1970, as well as a visiting professor at Laval University in 1978.
As an educator, Dr. Tiryakian has traveled to the Institute of Political Studies in 1992 as well as Free University in 1996. In 1978, 1980, 1989, 1993, 1991, and 1996, he was the summer seminar director of the National Endowment of the Humanities. Dr. Tiryakian was a lecturer for the Kyoto American Studies Summer Seminar in 1985, as well as a project leader of the Fulbright New Center Scholars Program from 2002 to 2003.
Dr. Tiryakian has contributed to his field through his publications. He has authored the books, "Sociologism and Existentialism" in 1962 and "For Durkheim: Essays in Historical and Cultural Sociology" in 2009. As an editor, Dr. Tiryakian contributed to professional journals, specifically Sociological Theory, Values and Sociocultural Change: Essays in Honor of P.A. Sorokin in 1963 and 2013, The Phenomenon of Sociology in 1971, On the Margin of the Visible: Sociology, the Esoteric, and the Occult in 1974, and The Global Crisis: Sociological Analyses and Responses in 1984. Dr. Tiryakian was the co-editor of "Theoretical Sociology: Perspectives and Developments" in 1970 and "New Nationalisms of the Developed West, 1985; Rethinking Civilizational Analysis" in 2004.
As a renowned sociologist and educator, Dr. Tiryakian is a member of various organizations, including the American Sociological Association, African Studies Association, Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy, Phi Beta Kappa, and Princeton Club. He was a council member and then president of the American Society for the Study of Religion between 1975 to 1978 and 1981 to 1984, respectively. Dr. Tiryakian also was the vice president and president of the International Association of French Language Sociologists from 1985 to 1992.
Dr. Tiryakian was the recipient of the Fulbright research award in 1955. He was a faculty research fellow from 1971 to 1972, as well as a fellow for the Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences from 1997 to 1998. From 2002 to 2003, Dr. Tiryakian was recognized as a Distinguished New Century Scholar by the Fulbright Scholar Program. Dr. Tiryakian has appeared in various Marquis Who's Who publications, including the fourth edition of Who's Who in Religion and the fifth and sixth editions of Who's Who in American Education. He also has been featured in the 44th through 60th and 63rd through 70th editions of Who's Who in America. His achievements have been recorded in the 25th and 38th through 42nd editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, as well as the 17th and 22nd editions of Who's Who in the World.
Born on August 6, 1929 in Bronxville, New York, he married Josefina Cintron on September 5, 1953. The couple raised two children: Edmund Carlos and Edwyn Ashod.
