The son of John Howden and Gloria Lorraine Quigley, Professor Quigley was born on December 16, 1957 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Studying at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Professor Quigley obtained a BS cum laude in 1978. He continued his studies at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, where he received a MD cum laude in 1982. Professor Quigley studied at Oxford University (Balliol College) in England, earning a D.Phil (immunology) in 1988. He emigrated from Canada to the United States in 1988.
Beginning as an intern, Professor Quigley worked at the University of Toronto in 1982 and 1983. He was a resident in surgery at the same university from 1983 to 1985. After completing 2 years in surgery at the University of Toronto, Professor Quigley was a research fellow for Oxford University from 1985 to 1988. Between 1988 and 1990 Professor Quigley completed his residency in surgery at Duke University Medical Center. In 1990, he was promoted to the position of fellow in cardiothoracic surgery and completed his training in 1992.
Between 1992 and 1995, Professor Quigley was an assistant Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University (Evanston Hospital) where he later became the director of the surgical research laboratory. Professor Quigley continued his practice at Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, Pennsylvania and was appointed Associate Professor at SUNY until 1998 when he was recruited to Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia to serve as the Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
In 2000 Professor Quigley was appointed Professor of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College. During his tenure at Einstein Medical Center he started, de novo, a satellite open-heart program within the Jefferson Healthcare Network at Frankford Hospital (Torresdale) which became one of the high-volume heart centers in the Delaware Valley. He was their first Chief of Cardiac Surgery.
Professor Quigley is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, the American College of Cardiology, and the International College of Surgeons. He has also been elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Society. As a celebrated cardiothoracic surgeon and educator, Professor Quigley has received various awards, including The Irving Heward Cameron Undergraduate Scholarship in Surgery from the University of Toronto in 1982, as well as Tau Omicron Phi Chi Scholarship 1985 through 1987, the Irving Cameron Scholarship in 1986, the Overseas Research Student Award - Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals of the Universities of the United Kingdom in 1985 through 1988, the Horatio Symonds Studentship in Surgery from Oxford University, United Kingdom. Professor Quigley also received during this same period a research grant from the Medical Research Council of Canada. As an educator, he obtained the Golden Apple Award (The American Medical Students Association - Teaching Award) in 1989 and Thomas Baffes MD Research Award (from Northwestern) in 1995. Between 1995 and 1996 Professor Quigley was awarded a faculty fellowship from The American College of Surgeons. Professor Quigley was awarded the Young Surgeon Award from Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Surgeons in 1996. Professor Quigley was also honored with the Dedication to Teaching Award and Excellence in Teaching Award from Frankford Hospital in 2006 and 2007 respectively.
Professor Quigley served as a Consultant for the Circulatory System Devices Panel - Medical Devices Advisory Committee for the Center for Devices and Radiological Health FDA. He has served as an Advisor to the Global Surgical Consortium Board. Between 2000 and 2002 Professor Quigley was a member of the Worldwide Scientific Advisory Board for St. Jude Medical. Throughout his career he has served as an invited guest editor for multiple (basic science and clinical) cardiothoracic journals. Professor Quigley, in collaboration with the British Heart Foundation and others, funded the Clinical Cardiac Research Facility at The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
Professor Quigley was (re)certified as a diplomat by the American Board of Surgery, American Board of Critical Care and American Board of Thoracic Surgery. On September 4, 1993, Professor Quigley married Debra Kristine Crumb, with whom he has 2 children: John Andrew and Lola Kristine. Professor Quigley has many hobbies, including running, sailing, swimming, and water/snow skiing. Professor Quigley has appeared in various Marquis Who's Who publications, including the 50th and 69th editions of Who's Who in America, 8th edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and the 3rd edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
