Cancer Immunotherapy Expert Marc S. Ernstoff, MD, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Medicine

Accomplished clinical investigator is chair of medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and chief of oncology at the University at Buffalo



    BUFFALO, NY, October 12, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marc S. Ernstoff, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Ernstoff is an expert on the immune response of the human body to cancer and on ways to harness that response through immunotherapy. Now Chair of the Department of Medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, he has been a mentor to the many students who have passed through his care across his three-decade career in academic oncology. When he joined Roswell Park in 2016, he was named senior vice president of clinical investigation and Katherine Anne Gioia Chair of Medicine at the Buffalo-based comprehensive cancer center, and also appointed as chief of the Division of Oncology at the University at Buffalo's Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Ernstoff received a BA in the history of art at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1974, and an MD from New York University in 1978. He went on to intern at the Bronx Municipal Medical Center and the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, specializing in internal medicine as a resident. In 1981, he accepted a prestigious oncology fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine, putting him on the road to a career dedicated to caring for patients with cancer.

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Ernstoff joined the Yale University faculty as an assistant professor of medicine and took on the additional role of director of the clinical research office at the Yale Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 1985, Dr. Ernstoff became acting director of the Yale Melanoma Unit of Yale New Haven Hospital. He went on to serve as director of genitourinary cancer as well as Hematology/Oncology Fellowship director at the University of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute from 1986-1991.

After that, Dr. Ernstoff began a prolific tenure of more than 20 years with the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, which he joined as an associate professor in 1991. He served as deputy director of Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Norris Cotton Cancer Center from 1995-2012 and as section chief of hematology and oncology from 1996-2002. From 1996 to 2012, Dr. Ernstoff was a trustee of the Hitchcock Foundation, fostering new medical professionals and medical research. From 1997 to 2002, he was named the Stephen B. Currier Clinical Scholar at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, and from 2012 to 2014 he held the O. Ross McIntyre Chair of Medicine Professorship.

Now a leading figure in Buffalo's medical community, Dr. Ernstoff looks back on numerous academic honors -- most recently, his 2012 Best Educator Award from the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program of the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and seven Distinguished Teacher Awards for residency training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock earned in the period from 2000 to 2014. He is an honored member of Alpha Epsilon Upsilon, Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Phi Beta Kappa from his student days at Emory University. Dr. Ernstoff continues to support numerous national efforts to advance cancer research and treatment through his roles in such organizations as the Society of Immunotherapy of Cancer, National Comprehensive Cancer Network and American Society of Clinical Oncology. He also is a former member of the World Health Organization Melanoma Programme and a current member of the International Cytokine Society.

Dr. Ernstoff continues to support scientific working groups and scholarship committees. He hopes that his life's work with melanoma, kidney cancer, the immune system and immunotherapy will help eradicate cancer for future generations.

Dr. Ernstoff is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, in both internal medicine and medical oncology.
