Diagnosing and treating patients with mental illness, such as depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and schizophrenia, he also has a subspecialty in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychopharmacology. Relying on a mix of medications and psychotherapy to help heal, Dr. Dahmes has been practicing for more than 40 years in both the public and private sectors.
Licensed by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners and is certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Dahmes practices in the state of Louisiana. After attending Louisiana State University School of Medicine, where he completed his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1975, he then completed his residency and fellowship there as well.
Dr. Dahmes' goal currently is to be on the cutting edge of pharmacogenomics. He has written and published several handouts on medications for mental illness as a concise means of teaching physicians about its complexity. He also authored a chapter in the textbook "Child and Adolescent Psychological Disorders". He has also been an investigational new drug researcher, is a Clinical Assistant Professor at LSU Health Sciences Center and has a private practice specializing in psychopharmacology. He currently serves as Treasurer for the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association and President of the Louisiana Council of Child Psychiatry.
A Commemorative Air Force preservation colonel, Dr. Dahmes also serves as Parliamentarian for the Orleans Parish chapter of the Alliance of Good Government, which focuses its efforts on political affairs. In his spare time, he plays in a local rock and roll band, aptly named "The Prescriptions" and cruises on his vintage powerboat, "Prince of Tides". He has been named to Best Doctors in Louisiana for the past 9 years and has also been recognized in Super Doctors. He is a Distinguished Lifetime Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology.
