A board certified internal medicine and infectious diseases doctor for more than 40 years, Dr. Marr is the founder or partner of two successful businesses, including BioMed, LLC, a medical and biotechnology consulting company that he established in 1999 where he has been involved in several start-up companies in management, research, clinical investigation, and investments. He is one of three general partners in Pacific Rim Ventures, formed in 2000. Pacific Rim is a venture capital firm with offices in Tokyo, Denver, Research Triangle Park, and Providence, with emphasis on companies in the biotechnology and medical devices areas. They are funded through Japanese investors with invested funds in North America.
During the course of his career in medicine, Dr. Marr has maintained primary clinical interests in internal medicine and infectious diseases, as well as immunocompromised hosts and tropical medicine, with sequential research interests in chemotherapy of infectious diseases, purine biochemistry, gene therapy, and healthcare delivery. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Infectious Disease Board, and his research has resulted in two patents, as well as over 100 articles in professional journals, approximately 75 abstracts and presentations, close to 100 monographs, reviews, and other articles, as well as five scientific books.
Studying at Xavier University, Dr. Marr completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology, cum laude, in 1959. He then completed an MD at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1964, and an internship in medicine at Osler Medical Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Marr served two years in the U.S. Army as a captain in the 8th Special Forces Group, and received a Master of Science in Microbial Biochemistry at St. Louis University Graduate School in 1969. From 1969 to 1970, Dr. Marr completed his residency in medicine at Barnes Hospital for the Washington University School of Medicine. He has since taken many management and finance courses in subjects such as negotiation, team building, quantitative strategic planning, outcomes evaluation, and several finance courses.
Prior to going in to business, Dr. Marr spent 20 years in higher education. He taught at Washington University School of Medicine in the internal medicine, microbiology, and pathology departments, followed by St. Louis University School of Medicine in the medicine and microbiology departments, as well as both vice chairman of the department of medicine and director of the division of infectious diseases. He also taught at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center as director of the division of laboratory medicine and the division of infectious diseases, as well as as a professor in the microbiology, biochemistry, and medicine departments. Dr. Marr then spent several years as the senior vice president of discovery research for Monsanto/Searle Research and Development. Later, he was appointed as vice president of research and development for Ribozyme Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and as chief executive officer, chief operating officer, chief scientific officer, and as a member of the board of directors for Immulogic Pharmaceutical Corporation.
Dr. Marr has been affiliated with numerous organizations, including the American College of Physician Executives, the American College of Physicians, The Association of American Physicians, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Central Society for Clinical Research. Currently serving on the board of advisors for Snoasis Medical Center in Denver since 2007, he previously served on various other corporate board of directors as well as scientific advisory boards. Dr. Marr has also been on the editorial board for The Pharos in Menlo Park, CA, since 2002. Furthermore, he has served on the finance council for the Immaculate Conception Church in Lafayette, CO, since 2009, and as a volunteer for the Community Food Share in Louisville, CO, since 2014. Additionally, Dr. Marr has been a member of the board for the Senior Resources of Broomfield, Inc., in Broomfield, CO, since 2017.
A 1974 fellow of the American College of Physicians, 1976 fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, and a 1978 fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Dr. Marr received numerous grants throughout the years from the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health. Most recently, he received a 2017 Heart of Broomfield Award for services to seniors, and was named the 2017 Grand Marshall at the Broomfield Days Parade. Earlier in his career, he received an Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award at Saint Louis University School of Medicine for the 1981 to 1982 academic school year.
Dr. Marr has been highlighted in several editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business and Who's Who in the Midwest, and nearly every edition of Who's Who in America since 2001. Dr. Marr speaks English, Spanish, and French, and enjoys activities such as scuba diving, sailing, woodworking, martial arts, and poetry. He has published two creative writing books and roughly 25 short stories, essays, and poems thus far.
